Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Saboteur

The tow truck hauled Ethan’s pride and joy away while the boy literally threw a tantrum on the sidewalk, kicking dirt and screaming obscenities until the neighbors threatened to call the police. Robert, shell-shocked and clutching the audit papers against his chest like a shield, had been forced to summon a ride-share just to escape the humiliation of his own son’s spectacle.
By noon, I was sitting inside the command office of Walter’s estate.
On the large wall-mounted monitor, high-resolution footage was playing on a loop. It was surveillance video taken from a covert high-definition camera Walter’s security team had installed in the ancient oak tree opposite my house two nights before Thanksgiving.
Walter sat beside me, sipping black coffee, his expression carved from stone.
"Play it again, Mark," Walter commanded.
The head of security rewound the footage.
On the screen, a dark blue sedan with tinted windows pulled up to my curb at 2:15 AM. Two men in hooded sweatshirts stepped out carrying heavy metal crowbars and cans of spray paint. But it was the driver who made my blood run cold.
The driver rolled down his window, flicking a cigarette into my lawn. The streetlamp illuminated his profile with crystal clarity.
It was Ethan.
He didn't just order the attack on my home; he was there. He sat in the driver's seat, pointing at my living room window, giving the signal. In the video, Ethan could be seen laughing and recording the vandalism on his own smartphone as the thugs shattered my windows and sprayed red paint across my walls.
"The two men with him," Mark explained, tapping a key on his laptop, "are Marcus Drake and Julian Cole. Small-time enforcers for an illegal sports betting ring operating out of the East Side docks. Our preliminary investigation shows your brother Ethan owes their syndicate approximately one hundred and eighty thousand dollars in accrued gambling debts."
I stared at the screen, my stomach churning. "He wanted my house to pay off his bookies."
"Exactly," Vance chimed in, entering the room with a fresh stack of bank statements. "Ethan’s plan was simple: intimidate you into surrendering the deed, transfer the property into the family holding, take out an immediate home equity line of credit, pay off Drake and Cole, and leave you with the wreckage. And your father, blinded by his desperate need to keep Ethan’s criminal habits hidden from the public eye, was ready to help him execute the theft."
Walter stood up, walking slowly toward the large monitor. He looked at the freeze-frame image of his youngest grandson grinning while his older grandson's home was being destroyed.
"I tolerated Robert’s arrogance for years because I hoped he would grow into a leader," Walter said, his voice dropping to a gravelly, dangerous pitch. "I ignored his vanity because the business was stable. But to raise a thief... to strike my grandson... to hire thugs to terrorize your own blood..."
Walter turned to Vance. "Are the police involved yet?"
"The local precinct received the preliminary report of the vandalism," Vance replied. "However, with this video evidence and the phone records linking Ethan’s burner phone to Marcus Drake, this is no longer a misdemeanor property crime. This is felony conspiracy, extortion, and interstate wire fraud, given the digital threats sent across state lines."
"Hold the criminal charges for forty-eight hours," Walter ordered, his voice carrying the absolute weight of a sovereign monarch.
I looked at him, surprised. "Grandpa, why wait? He belongs in a cell."
"A cell is too easy, Leo," Walter replied, his eyes narrowing with icy brilliance. "A cell allows your father to hire high-priced lawyers, post bail, and spin a narrative that Ethan is merely a 'troubled youth' who made a mistake. We will not give them the luxury of playing victims."
Walter walked over to his desk and pulled out an ornate, gold-embossed invitation.
"Tomorrow evening is the Annual Carter Logistics Founders' Gala at the Grandview Country Club. Every major investor, client, bank executive, and local politician will be in attendance. Robert has planned this evening for six months to announce Ethan’s appointment as Vice President of Regional Development."

A slow, grim smile began to form on Walter’s face.
"Robert wants an audience? We will give him one he will never forget."
