Chapter 8 - Ashes and Empires

Lucas stumbled backward, his knees buckling until he caught himself against the credenza behind him. The room felt suddenly devoid of air.
"No..." Lucas choked out, looking around at the board members he had ruled over with arrogance for five years. "Thomas... Richard... you’ve known me since I was a boy. You can't let her do this! Sinclair orchestrated this whole thing to strip our family of its heritage!"
"Your family had a heritage of honor once, Lucas," Thomas Sterling replied coldly, closing his folder. "You replaced it with cheap mistresses, cocaine habits, and beating your wife in public ballrooms. You brought this ruin on your own head."
Audrey took the central seat at the head of the boardroom table—the seat Lucas had occupied just moments before. She looked up at the board, her voice steady, authoritative, and utterly in control.
"As majority shareholder, my first motion is the immediate termination of Lucas Vance as Chief Operating Officer and Chairman of the Board, effective this second," Audrey announced. "All favor?"
Every single hand in the room went up. Not a single person hesitated.
"The motion carries," Audrey said smoothly. "My second motion is the formal invitation of Sinclair Capital to restructure our delinquent commercial debt into a twenty percent non-voting equity partnership, stabilizing our liquidity and restoring investor confidence."
"Motion seconded," Thomas Sterling said immediately. "All in favor?"
Every hand went up again.
Lucas watched the total, systematic dismantling of his life happen in less than two minutes. The arrogance, the smug entitlement, the venom that had sustained him for years evaporated, leaving only a pathetic, broken shell of a man.
He lunged forward, reaching across the table toward Audrey, his face twisted in a mask of psychotic rage. "You bitch! You planned this! You took everything from me! I’ll kill you—!"
He never made it across the mahogany.
Daniel intercepted him mid-stride. With cold, mechanical precision, Daniel grabbed Lucas by the lapels of his designer jacket, drove his knee violently into Lucas’s solar plexus, and slammed him onto the hardwood floor of the boardroom.
Lucas gasped for air, curling into a fetal position, clutching his ribs, wheezing pitifully.
The heavy double doors opened once more. This time, it wasn't lawyers or executives who walked in.
Four federal agents wearing dark windbreakers with yellow letters—**FBI**—stepped into the room, led by an Assistant United States Attorney.
"Lucas Vance?" the lead agent announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, interstate embezzlement, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit securities fraud. You have the right to remain silent."
Audrey stood up slowly from her chair, looking down at the man who had dragged her across broken glass just days ago.
As the agents hauled Lucas to his feet, clicking the cold steel around his wrists, Lucas looked at her, his eyes wild, tears streaming down his bruised cheeks.
"Audrey... please," he whimpered, his voice broken. "Talk to them. Tell them it was a misunderstanding. I love you, Audrey. You know I love you!"
Audrey looked at him with neither hatred nor anger—only the cold, devastating pity one reserves for a dead insect.

"You never loved me, Lucas," she said softly. "You just loved the power you thought you had over me. Have a good life in prison."
The agents dragged him out of the room. Lucas’s muffled sobs echoed down the hallway until the elevator doors closed, cutting off his voice forever.
