Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Ambush

The 45th floor of Vance Enterprises was dead silent on Monday morning.
The boardroom was packed with twelve panicked board members, legal counsels, and financial advisors. At the head of the long mahogany table sat Lucas Vance, looking gaunt, his eyes hollowed with dark circles, his fingers drumming erratically on a leather portfolio.
"We issue a statement denying all allegations," Lucas commanded his chief communications officer, his voice cracking with tension. "We blame the market volatility on Sinclair's predatory short-selling. We claim Audrey was mentally unstable and coerced by Sinclair Capital to destabilize our firm!"
"And who is going to believe that, Lucas?" demanded Thomas Sterling, a veteran board member and former friend of Lucas’s father. "The video of you dragging her by the hair was analyzed by three independent forensic digital firms. It’s authentic. The stock is down forty-four percent. The banks have frozen our operating credit lines. We are twelve hours away from default!"
"We will not default!" Lucas roared, slamming his fist onto the table so hard a water glass overturned. "This is *my* company! My family built this empire! Sinclair thinks he can buy our debt and bully me out? I will burn this entire company to the ground before I hand him the keys!"
"You won't have to hand them to me, Lucas," a deep, resonant voice announced from the double oak doors.
The room froze.
The heavy doors swung open. Daniel Sinclair stepped inside, radiant with power, clad in an immaculate navy pinstripe three-piece suit. But he didn't walk to the head of the table.
He stopped, turned, and extended his hand toward the doorway.
Audrey Miller walked in.
A collective gasp rippled through the room. She was magnificent. Dressed in a bespoke emerald-green sheath dress that accentuated her poise, her chin held high, her eyes sparkling with cold intelligence. She carried no purse, only a slim tablet and a signed legal decree.
Lucas sprang to his feet, knocking his leather executive chair backward against the wall. "What the hell is this? Security! Remove this woman! She has no standing in this building!"
"Sit down, Lucas," Audrey said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room with the force of a guillotine.
"You don't tell me what to do!" Lucas spat, his chest heaving, his face contorting with rage. "You’re an adulterous, ungrateful parasite who—"
"Mr. Vance, be quiet!" Thomas Sterling barked, his eyes glued to the documents Marcus Vance was currently sliding down the conference table to every board member.
"What is that?" Lucas demanded, his voice suddenly pitching higher with genuine terror.
"That," Audrey said, walking slowly down the length of the table toward him, "is the execution of my grandfather's legacy clause. Under the original Vance-Miller merger agreement of 1994, fifty-one percent of the voting shares of this enterprise were held in trust for the Miller bloodline, contingent on my marriage."
Audrey stopped right across from Lucas, meeting his bloodshot eyes without blinking.
"Under Clause 14B," she continued, "in the event of proven domestic violence, gross criminal misconduct, or financial embezzlement by the spouse, the marriage clause is nullified, and the voting shares revert entirely and irrevocably to me."

"That's a lie!" Lucas screamed, turning wildly toward his chief legal counsel. "Tell her that’s impossible! Tell her!"
The corporate lawyer looked at his shoes, refusing to meet Lucas’s gaze. "The clause is valid, Mr. Vance. The Manhattan Supreme Court ratified the emergency injunction at eight this morning. Audrey Vance... excuse me, Audrey Miller... is the majority shareholder of Vance Enterprises."
