Chapter 8 - The Last Promise

Margaret denied killing Thomas Carter.

When Adrian showed her the photograph, she began to cry.

"I met him that night because he had found evidence that Jonathan's trust was being used to hide stolen money," she explained. "He told me he had discovered the original transfer order."

"Why didn't you tell us?" Evelyn asked.

"Because I was afraid. Martin threatened to kill Jonathan if I spoke."

"Did you know my father was going to die?"

Margaret shook her head.

"I thought he was going to meet Eleanor. She promised she could help him."

Evelyn studied the photograph.

"Then who took this?"

Margaret looked closely.

"The man standing behind the tree is Martin Shaw."

Adrian leaned forward.

"Are you certain?"

"I would recognize him anywhere."

The photograph showed Martin watching Thomas and Margaret from a distance.

A second image, discovered among the recovered files, showed Thomas leaving the estate alone.

He was carrying a small leather case.

The case had never been recovered from the crash.

Investigators believed Martin had taken it.

But where had he hidden it?

The answer came from an unexpected source.

Daniel Cross, recovering under federal protection, requested to speak with Evelyn.

When she arrived at the hospital, he looked exhausted but alert.

"I need to tell you something about your father," he said.

She sat beside his bed.

"Go ahead."

"After the crash, Martin ordered me to remove certain items from the evidence room. I followed his instructions because he threatened my family. But I kept one thing."

He reached beneath his pillow and produced a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a storage locker.

The number was written on the back.

"Locker 214," Cross said. "Your father rented it under his own name. Martin never found it."

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"Why didn't you give this to the police?"

"Because I was a coward."

He looked at her.

"I've spent three years telling myself that silence was the only way to protect my family. I was wrong."

Evelyn took his hand.

"Then help us put things right."

The locker stood in a storage facility outside Manhattan.

Inside, they found Thomas's leather case, several bank statements, and a sealed letter addressed to Evelyn.

She opened it with trembling fingers.

My darling Evelyn,

If you are reading this, something has gone terribly wrong. I hope you and Noah are safe. I hope you have grown into the brave, compassionate woman I have always known you would become.

I discovered that money was being stolen through a network of companies connected to the Blackwood family. I also discovered that someone was using Jonathan Ellis's identity to hide the transfers.

I tried to convince the people involved to come forward. Some were frightened. Others were greedy. One man threatened my children.

Evelyn pressed the letter against her chest.

I am not afraid of losing my job or my reputation. I am afraid of leaving you without answers.

If I cannot come home, please remember this: the truth is worth pursuing, but your life is worth more than revenge. Do not let the people who hurt us turn your heart into something cruel.

Love always,

Dad.

Evelyn began to sob.

Adrian wrapped his arms around her, holding her as she cried for the father she had lost and the years she had spent believing she was alone.

When she finally lifted her head, he wiped a tear from her cheek.

"Your father was an extraordinary man," he whispered.

"He was my hero."

"He still is."

For the first time, Evelyn kissed Adrian.

It was gentle, hesitant, and filled with everything they had been too frightened to say.

Then her phone rang.

Rachel's voice was urgent.

"Martin has escaped custody."

Evelyn pulled away.

"How?"

"Someone inside the facility disabled the surveillance system. Martin disappeared during a medical transfer."

Adrian stood immediately.

"Where is he going?"

Rachel paused.

"We found his vehicle near the Blackwood estate."

They rushed back to Westchester.

The gates stood open.

Inside the mansion, lights burned in the study.

Martin was waiting beside the fireplace, holding a gun.

Jonathan stood across the room with his hands raised.

Claire was nowhere to be seen.

"Let him go," Adrian demanded.

Martin smiled.

"Your father made the same mistake you did. He believed he could save everyone."

Jonathan's face was bruised, but he remained standing.

"Where is Claire?"

"Safe, for now."

Evelyn stepped into the room.

Martin turned toward her.

"Thomas Carter should have walked away. Instead, he chose to become a martyr."

"No," Evelyn said. "He chose to be honest."

Martin raised the gun slightly.

"And honesty cost him his life."

Adrian moved between Martin and Evelyn.

"You have the evidence you wanted. The ledger, the letters, the recordings. There's nowhere left to run."

Martin laughed.

"There's always somewhere to run."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small device.

A timer flashed on its screen.

Jonathan's face went pale.

"What is that?"

Martin smiled.

"A final insurance policy."

He had planted an explosive device in the mansion's basement.

The timer showed four minutes.

Martin backed toward the door.

"Leave the house, and you may survive. Stay, and you can join your father."

He disappeared into the hallway.

Adrian rushed toward the basement entrance.

Evelyn caught his arm.

"No. We need to get everyone out."

They searched the ground floor for Claire while Rachel called the bomb squad.

Jonathan found her locked in a pantry, shaken but unharmed.

They escaped through the rear entrance as emergency vehicles approached.

At the end of the driveway, Evelyn turned toward the mansion.

A flash of light illuminated the windows.

Then came a deep, thunderous explosion.

The ground shook beneath their feet.

Adrian pulled Evelyn against him.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The mansion's lower windows shattered, sending smoke into the night.

Martin Shaw had vanished.

But the evidence was safe.

And for the first time, Evelyn knew that her father's death would not remain a mystery.
