Chapter 6 - A Brother's Revenge

Jonathan led them into a private consultation room and locked the door.

"I don't want your money," he told Adrian. "I want everything your father built to be taken apart."

Adrian remained standing.

"If Martin stole your inheritance, we'll recover it. If he committed crimes, we'll make sure he's prosecuted."

"Prosecuted?" Jonathan laughed bitterly. "You still believe the system works because it worked for you."

"It didn't work for Thomas Carter."

"Exactly."

Jonathan turned toward Evelyn.

"Your father believed that telling the truth would save people. He was wrong. The truth only matters when someone powerful decides to listen."

Evelyn looked at the photograph in his hand.

"Did you know my father?"

"I met him once. He came to see my mother. He promised to help us."

"And did he?"

"He tried."

Jonathan's voice cracked on the last word.

"Three days later, he was dead."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Then help us expose Martin."

Jonathan shook his head.

"Martin has spent twenty years hiding behind people like our father. If we expose him through the proper channels, he'll disappear before the trial begins."

"Then what do you intend to do?"

Jonathan looked at Adrian.

"I intend to take control of Blackwood Industries, freeze the accounts, and release every document publicly."

"That could destroy thousands of employees' jobs."

"Then the company should never have been built on stolen money."

Adrian had no answer.

Jonathan continued.

"I have enough evidence to prove that Richard used my identity to create a false trust. I also have records showing Martin transferred millions through companies registered in my name."

"Why didn't you come forward earlier?" Evelyn asked.

"Because Martin threatened Claire. He told me that if I exposed him, he would make her disappear."

"Where is she now?"

Jonathan looked down.

"I don't know."

For the first time, Evelyn saw fear beneath his anger.

She moved closer.

"Then we're looking for the same people."

Jonathan studied her.

"You trust Adrian?"

"No."

Adrian glanced at her.

She continued, "But I believe he's trying to do the right thing now. That's more than I can say for the people who killed my father."

Jonathan seemed to consider this.

Finally, he placed the photograph on the table.

"My father kept a second ledger. The original. It contains every payment Martin made, including the money used to arrange Thomas Carter's death."

"Where is it?" Adrian asked.

"Inside the old Blackwood shipping terminal."

Evelyn recognized the location from the first ledger.

"Brooklyn."

Jonathan nodded.

"But there's a problem. Martin knows I'm alive. He knows I have the evidence. And he knows I intend to expose him."

A knock sounded at the door.

The nurse entered, pale and breathless.

"Mr. Ellis, there are men outside asking for you. They say they're federal agents."

Jonathan's expression hardened.

"Are they carrying identification?"

"Yes."

"Then tell them to wait."

He turned to Adrian.

"Martin has friends in law enforcement. We can't trust anyone until we verify their identities."

Rachel called her contacts at the federal task force. Within minutes, she confirmed that no agents had been dispatched to the clinic.

The men outside were impostors.

They escaped before security could intercept them.

One left behind a phone containing a message.

Bring the ledger to the shipping terminal by midnight, or Claire Bennett dies.

Jonathan's face drained of color.

Evelyn reached for his hand.

"We'll get her back."

"You don't understand," he whispered. "Claire saved my life. She was the only person who ever told me I wasn't a mistake."

"Then we won't abandon her."

Adrian looked at Rachel.

"Contact the task force. Tell them we have a hostage situation and evidence of organized financial crimes."

Jonathan shook his head.

"No police."

"We need them."

"We need people who won't be bought."

Evelyn stepped between them.

"Then we make certain the right people know exactly what's happening. We don't walk into a trap alone, and we don't hand Martin the ledger."

Jonathan studied her for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

They spent the next two hours preparing.

The federal task force agreed to provide surveillance, but the operation would remain confidential until Claire was safe. Rachel arranged a decoy ledger, while Jonathan supplied the location of several hidden cameras inside the terminal.

At 11:40 p.m., Evelyn, Adrian, and Jonathan entered the abandoned shipping complex.

The building stood beside the river, surrounded by rusting containers and broken security lights.

A single lamp burned inside the main warehouse.

Claire sat in a chair beneath it, her wrists tied.

Martin Shaw stood behind her.

He was older than the photographs suggested, with a narrow face and cold gray eyes.

"Jonathan," he called. "You've brought the family."

Jonathan stepped forward.

"Let her go."

"Give me the ledger."

Adrian held up the decoy.

"First, release Claire."

Martin laughed.

"You really are your father's son."

His gaze shifted to Evelyn.

"And you must be the girl who caused all this trouble."

Evelyn fought to keep her expression steady.

"You killed my father."

Martin's smile vanished.

"Your father was an accountant who mistook himself for a hero."

"He was a good man."

"He was inconvenient."

Jonathan lunged forward, but Adrian caught his arm.

Martin raised a gun.

"One more step, and Claire dies."

Silence settled over the warehouse.

Then Evelyn noticed something.

A small red light blinking above the security camera.

The federal team was watching.

She took a slow breath.

"You think you've won," she said.

Martin smiled.

"I have."

"No. You've made one mistake."

He tilted his head.

"What's that?"

"You told us everything."

Martin's expression changed.

Behind him, Claire suddenly kicked the chair backward, knocking him off balance.

Jonathan rushed forward.

Adrian seized Martin's gun arm.

A struggle erupted beneath the lamp.

The weapon fired into the ceiling.

Federal agents stormed through the side doors.

Martin was forced to the floor and handcuffed.

Jonathan untied Claire, holding her tightly as she began to cry.

Evelyn stood beside Adrian, trembling with relief.

For one moment, she believed it was over.

Then Martin looked up from the concrete.

"You think arresting me will save you?" he spat. "You have no idea who financed your father's death."

He smiled at Adrian.

"Richard didn't give the order."

Adrian went still.

May you like

Martin leaned closer.

"Your mother did."
