Chapter 10 - Reconstruction

By dawn, the news had shattered every major media network across the country.
*Billionaire Julian Beaumont Arrested on Federal Treason and Extortion Charges.*
*Beaumont County Police Department Disbanded Following Systemic Corruption Probe.*
*Breakthrough Biomedical Startup Awarded Massive $500M Defense Contract.*
At the small wooden dining table in Marcus’s modest farmhouse, Claire sat with a steaming mug of black coffee, watching the television crawl across the screen.
Preston Beaumont had been remanded without bail to a federal detention facility, facing charges of aggravated assault, extortion, and conspiracy that carried a mandatory minimum of twenty-five years. Her father was out on the porch, wearing his familiar faded flannel shirt and work boots, gently oiling the hinges of the screen door. To anyone driving by, he looked like just another retired grandfather enjoying the quiet morning sun.
She walked out onto the porch, handing him a fresh cup of coffee.
"They're talking about you on the news," she said, leaning against the wooden railing. "Well, not by name. They’re calling it an ‘unprecedented inter-agency federal intervention sparked by anonymous defense liaisons.’"
Marcus took the mug with a quiet chuckle. "Government bureaucrats love big words. Keeps them from having to explain the truth."
"Thank you, Dad," Claire said, looking at him with deep, unshakeable pride. "For everything."

Marcus rested a hand on her shoulder. "Always, Claire. You build the future. I'll make sure the ground under your feet stays solid."
For a few minutes, there was peace. The sun climbed higher over the Appalachian hills, bathing the quiet valley in golden morning light. The nightmare at the country club was over, and the villains had met their absolute ruin.
