Chapter 11 - The Shadow Behind the Curtain

The peace did not last.
At 10:14 AM, the heavy satellite transponder resting inside Marcus’s locked desk drawer began to chime.
It wasn't the standard alert tone. It was a rapid, urgent, three-tone pulse—a frequency Marcus had programmed thirty years ago for one reason only.
A dead-man alert.
Marcus set his coffee cup down on the porch table. His eyes instantly narrowed, the gentle warmth vanishing, replaced once more by the lethal calculating mask of Specter-Six.
He stepped inside the study, unlocked the reinforced bottom drawer, and picked up the handset.
"Speak," Marcus said.
A digitized, scrambled voice replied, but it wasn't General Vance. It wasn't anyone from the Pentagon.
*"Impressive performance at the country club, Commander Reed,"* the voice whispered through the static, cold and electronically warped. *"Julian Beaumont was always a clumsy, arrogant blunt instrument. We knew he would overstep with your daughter. We knew he would make a scene."*
Marcus felt an icy knot tighten in his gut. "Who is this?"
*"Beaumont thought he was stealing Claire’s patent for money,"* the voice laughed softly—a chilling, hollow sound. *"He had no idea we were feeding him her surveillance files just to draw you out of retirement. We needed to know if Specter-Six was still alive. We needed to see you burn your National Command card."*
Outside the window, Claire was laughing on her cell phone, celebrating with her chief laboratory engineer.
Marcus gripped the receiver so hard the plastic groaned. "If you come within a thousand miles of my daughter, I will dismantle your entire network brick by brick."
*"It’s not your daughter we’re coming for, Marcus. We already have what we came for. You authorized the military override protocol last night. That means your personal command biometric signature is now active on the national defense grid for the next twelve hours."*
Marcus froze. His breath caught in his throat.
*"Thank you for unlocking the door, Commander,"* the voice purred. *"Operation Black Trident has officially commenced."*
The line went dead.

A split second later, the sky above the quiet mountain valley tore open with the shriek of supersonic jet engines, and the screen of Marcus’s satellite terminal flashed blood-red with a catastrophic alert:
*CRITICAL WARNING: NORAD DEFENSE GRID COMPROMISED. ORIGIN CODE: SPECTER-SIX.*
