Chapter 6 - Center Stage

The house lights in the St. Regis ballroom plunged into darkness, leaving only the soft glow of table votives and the towering, luminescent blue of the main stage displays. The master of ceremonies, an Emmy-winning television host Brett had paid fifty thousand dollars to secure, stepped up to the podium.
"Ladies and gentlemen, titans of the culinary world, and esteemed guests," the host boomed, his polished voice rolling over the silence. "Tonight, we honor vision. We honor a man who took the humble craft of Midwestern hearth cooking and elevated it into an empire worth tens of millions. Please welcome our CEO of the Year, Brett Sterling!"
The applause began like thunder.
Brett, regaining his composure with the seasoned instinct of a sociopath, flashed his million-dollar smile. He gave Audrey a chilling, dismissive look, squeezed Sierra’s fingers in full view of the front tables, and buttoned his tuxedo jacket as he strode purposefully up the carpeted stairs to the stage.
Sierra followed him as far as the VIP riser at the foot of the stage, glowing with second-hand glory, her hand deliberately resting against the brooch so every camera would catch its gleam.
Brett reached the podium, adjusted the microphone, and raised both hands to quiet the ovation. He was in his element. The lights washed over him, turning his silvering temples into pure platinum.
"Thank you," Brett said, his voice rich, warm, and thoroughly dripping with humility. "When I started this journey, people told me that tradition had no place in modern fine dining. They said the food of our grandmothers was too simple, too plain for a sophisticated palate. But I knew better. I knew that with the right leadership, the right branding, and the right... relentless drive, we could conquer this city."
He paused, looking down at Sierra.
"And tonight, as we stand on the brink of our greatest nationwide expansion with our partners at Vance Capital, I want to acknowledge the people who make this dream breathe. My incredible team. My brilliant marketing VP, Sierra Collins, whose modern vision keeps us young."
A spattering of knowing applause rippled through the front row, though several older restaurateurs looked distinctly uncomfortable.
"To mark this occasion," Brett continued, turning with an expansive, theatrical sweep of his arm toward the giant ninety-foot screen behind him, "we’ve prepared a short retrospective. A look back at the heart, the soul, and the sacrifices that brought Sterling Hospitality to the summit. Roll the film."
Brett turned, waiting for the cinematic strings of the brassy corporate anthem to swell.

Instead, the ballroom was plunged into total, suffocating silence.
