Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Coup

Sierra’s breath hissed inward through her teeth, her painted smile instantly souring into pure venom. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me perfectly, dear," Audrey said, her posture regal, her hands resting loosely at her sides. "And Brett heard me too. Don't worry, Sierra. When you steal from a woman who has butchered whole hogs before dawn, you don't need to fear screaming. You need to fear the silence."

Brett grabbed Audrey’s elbow, his grip tight enough to leave bruises beneath the emerald silk. "That is enough," he snarled under his breath, leaning down so his mouth was an inch from her ear. "You think you're indispensable, Audrey? Look around this room. Every single check that funds your kitchen comes through me. Vance Capital isn't investing in your grandmother's sourdough starter; they're investing in the Sterling brand. In me. In Sierra's marketing machinery."

"Is that what you tell yourself while you sign the debt guarantees?" Audrey asked, her voice dropping to a cool, lethal whisper.

Brett froze.

"You think I don't know about the shell company in Delaware, Brett? You think because I spend my days testing sauces, I don't read the corporate tax returns our accountant accidentally forwards to the home office?" Audrey smiled, and it was the coldest thing Brett had ever seen. "You’ve leveraged eighty percent of the parent company to secure Sierra’s new lifestyle concept. If this gala doesn't close Vance tonight, you're bankrupt by Tuesday."

Brett’s face drained of color. The arrogant charm vanished, replaced by the cornered ferocity of a predator realizing the trap had already snapped shut around his ankle. "You wouldn't dare blow this up. Half of that debt is in your name, Audrey. If I go down, you lose the restaurants. You lose the townhouse. You lose everything Leo needs for college."

"Leo doesn't need your stolen money," a calm voice said from behind them.

Arthur Vance had stepped back into their circle, but he wasn't looking at Brett. He was looking at his phone, his silver eyebrows drawn into a deep, thunderous furrow.

"Brett," Arthur said, his voice quiet, carrying the undeniable weight of an institutional titan who managed eight billion dollars in private capital. "The AV director just flagged me. There appears to be an unscheduled update to your keynote media package."

Brett blinked, thrown entirely off balance. "What? No, that’s impossible. Sierra vetted the final slide deck at four o'clock today."

"I personally locked the thumb drive in my clutch until we handed it to the technician twenty minutes ago," Sierra said, her voice rising an octave in defensive panic. She glared at Audrey. "Did you touch the tech booth?"

"Audrey has been standing right here," Arthur noted coolly, his gaze shifting to the giant, ninety-foot high-definition screens framing the gala stage at the end of the ballroom. The Sterling Hospitality Group logo—a stylized golden fork entwined with wheat—was pulsing gently against a black background. "Though I believe your son was seen entering the production control suite three minutes ago."

Brett’s eyes widened with genuine horror. "Leo?"
