Chapter 7 - The Family Dinner Ambush

Word of the impending arrest warrants spread through the family like wildfire. By that evening, my father wasn't calling from the hospital; he was waiting on the sidewalk two houses down from mine, shivering in the brisk evening wind.

When I walked down my driveway to retrieve the evening mail, he stepped out from the shadows beneath an oak tree. He carried a battered metal lockbox under his arm.

"Sarah," he said softly, holding up both hands to show he meant no harm. "I’m not here to yell. Eleanor isn't in the hospital anymore. It was an anxiety attack. She checked herself out against medical advice."

"You shouldn't be here, Dad. Mark filed an initial cease-and-desist order."

"I know," he choked out. "Just give me five minutes. That’s all. Then you can call the police on me if you want."

I looked down the street, taking a deep breath before gesturing toward the garden bench on my front lawn. "Five minutes."

He sat down heavily, resting the lockbox on his knees. With shaking fingers, he pulled a small key from his pocket, unlocked the latch, and opened the lid. Inside were stacks of yellowed envelopes, bank deposit slips from the late nineties, and a series of handwritten legal forms.

"What is this?" I asked.

"When you were in the middle of adopting Emma," Dad began, his eyes fixed on the contents of the box, "Eleanor hired a private investigator. She spent eight thousand dollars behind your back trying to track down Emma’s biological father."

A cold spike of adrenaline shot through my veins. "What did you say?"

"She hated that you were adopting," Arthur whispered, tears cutting clean paths through the grime on his face. "She felt you were throwing your life away, that you’d never marry or give her 'real' grandchildren. She wanted to locate the biological father and secretly pay his legal fees to challenge the termination of his parental rights."

The sheer depravity of what he was saying knocked the wind out of me. My own mother had tried to dismantle the legal custody of a neglected four-year-old child just to maintain control over my life.

"Why didn't she do it?" I demanded, my hands shaking with suppressed fury.

"The investigator found him," Dad said, pulling out a thick manila folder from the bottom of the box. "He was serving an eight-year prison sentence in Nevada for aggravated armed robbery. He signed away his rights without hesitation in exchange for five hundred dollars of commissary money. But Eleanor kept the file. She kept all of it."

He pushed the lockbox toward me.

"I kept quiet for twenty years, Sarah. I let her run over you, over Rachel, over anyone who got in her way because I was terrified of being alone. But yesterday... when I saw Emma’s face at that table..." He broke down, burying his face in his rough hands. "I am a coward, Sarah. But I won't let her destroy that little girl. Take this. Give it to your lawyer."
