Chapter 6 - A MILLION-DOLLAR PROMISE

When Richard returned to Charleston, he found Vanessa waiting in his office.

She wore a cream-colored suit and carried a folder.

“I assume you've discovered the transfer,” she said.

Richard closed the door.

“Explain it.”

“My cousin's company provides private security services. I hired them to investigate the people who have been spreading rumors about you.”

“You paid them to break into Daniel Mercer's storage unit?”

“I did not authorize a break-in.”

“Then why did you tell them to search for Elizabeth's records?”

Vanessa set the folder on his desk.

“Because I knew what those records could do to you.”

“By revealing the truth?”

“By destroying your family's reputation.”

Richard laughed once, without humor.

“My family has survived worse than the truth.”

“You don't understand how society works. People don't care whether every allegation is proven. They care about the scandal.”

“And what do you care about?”

Vanessa stared at him.

For a moment, her polished expression slipped.

“I care about us.”

“No. You care about the wedding.”

She stood abruptly.

“You promised me a future.”

“I promised to marry you before I understood what you were willing to do to get what you wanted.”

Her face hardened.

“You think Maria is different? She's a housekeeper who has spent years hiding a child connected to your family. She lied to you.”

“She protected a little girl.”

“From whom?”

Richard said nothing.

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“You don't know what happened to Elizabeth. You don't know what Maria has been told. And you don't know whether Lily is even who they claim she is.”

“The bracelet is authentic. Elizabeth's letter identifies her daughter. The evidence is being examined.”

“Then get a DNA test.”

“I intend to.”

“Good. Because if that child really is your niece, she will inherit part of the Calloway fortune.”

Richard looked at her carefully.

There it was.

The motive beneath the concern.

Vanessa had been thinking about the inheritance from the beginning.

“The trust is not yours to control,” he said.

“Not yet.”

He stared at her.

Vanessa seemed to realize what she had said.

Then she reached into her folder and placed a document on the desk.

It was a draft agreement outlining financial arrangements after their marriage. Several clauses would have given Vanessa access to investment accounts connected to the estate.

Richard had never approved the document.

“You prepared this without my consent.”

“I was planning for our future.”

“You were planning to take control of my family's money.”

“Don't be dramatic.”

Richard walked toward the door and opened it.

“Our engagement is over.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You can't do this.”

“I just did.”

“You'll regret humiliating me.”

“I regret not seeing you clearly sooner.”

She grabbed her folder and left.

Within an hour, news of the broken engagement had reached the society pages.

But Richard was no longer concerned about appearances.

He arranged a DNA test using legally obtained samples, with Maria's consent and an independent laboratory overseeing the process.

The results arrived nine days later.

Lily was Elizabeth Calloway's biological daughter.

Richard sat alone in his office, reading the report.

He had a niece.

A little girl who loved yellow dresses, repaired rabbits, and dancing in the kitchen.

A child who had grown up without the family that could have protected her.

He felt anger, grief, and an overwhelming tenderness he had not expected.

When he visited Maria's apartment that evening, Lily ran to the door.

“Mr. Richard!”

She stopped just before reaching him, as though she wasn't sure whether she was allowed to hug him.

Richard crouched.

“Would you like a hug?”

Lily nodded and wrapped her arms around his neck.

He held her carefully.

“I have something important to tell you.”

“Did I win the money?”

He smiled.

“You certainly earned a million-dollar promise. But I want you to understand that you don't have to dance for money, and you don't have to perform for anyone to deserve kindness.”

Lily considered that.

“Can I still dance?”

“Whenever you want.”

She beamed.

Maria watched them from the doorway.

Richard looked up at her.

“The DNA test confirms it. Lily is Elizabeth's daughter.”

Maria's eyes filled.

“I know.”

“Why didn't you tell me sooner?”

“Because I didn't know whether the truth would bring her a family or another danger.”

Richard nodded.

“That was a fair concern.”

He explained that he wanted to establish a protected trust for Lily, separate from the disputed assets connected to his father's business.

Maria listened carefully.

“I will not sign anything that gives you control over her life.”

“I wouldn't ask you to.”

“And she stays with me.”

“Of course.”

Maria looked at him for a long moment.

Then she nodded.

“Good.”

For the first time, they began discussing Lily's future as people on the same side.

But that night, as Richard drove back to the estate, Thomas called with news.

Vanessa had disappeared from her apartment.

Her phone had been switched off.

And the police had discovered that a large amount of money had been transferred from an account connected to Charles Cole, Vanessa's father, to an offshore company.

The money had been moved just hours after Richard ended the engagement.

Someone was preparing to flee.

And they had taken the last remaining records of Elizabeth's disappearance with them.
