Chapter 4 - THE NIGHT ELIZABETH DISAPPEARED

Richard found Maria waiting in the estate's small staff kitchen the following morning.
She looked tired, but she did not appear surprised to see him.
“You found the note,” she said.
Richard stopped.
“You know about it?”
“Elizabeth told me your father would eventually try to keep us connected to the family.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't know whether you could be trusted.”
The words struck him harder than he expected.
Maria took a breath.
“I was twenty-two when I met Elizabeth. I was working two jobs and sleeping in a room I shared with another woman. My family had abandoned me, and I had no one to call when I got into trouble.”
“What kind of trouble?”
“My former boyfriend had become violent. Elizabeth helped me leave. She paid for a bus ticket and found me temporary work.”
Richard listened without interrupting.
“She never told me the full story of her family. She only said that someone wanted to control her life. She was afraid that if she returned to Charleston, they would force her into a marriage she didn't want.”
“Who?”
Maria looked at him.
“Your father.”
Richard felt the floor shift beneath him.
His father, William Calloway, had been a formidable man who believed family loyalty was more important than personal freedom. He had built a shipping empire through discipline, ruthless negotiation, and an unwavering demand that his children obey him.
Richard had spent his youth fighting those expectations.
Elizabeth had been gentler, but no less stubborn.
“She fell in love with someone your father considered unsuitable,” Maria continued. “When he found out, he threatened to cut her off and destroy the man's business.”
“Who was he?”
Maria hesitated.
“His name was Daniel Mercer.”
Richard recognized the name from the old records.
Daniel had been a mechanic who worked near the harbor. He and Elizabeth had planned to leave Charleston together, but he disappeared shortly before Elizabeth vanished.
Richard's father had told the family that Daniel had stolen money and fled.
“Was Daniel Lily's father?” Richard asked.
“No.”
Maria's answer came immediately.
“Then whose child is Lily?”
Maria looked down at the bracelet.
“Elizabeth's daughter.”
Richard stopped breathing for a moment.
“Elizabeth had a child?”
“Yes. She gave birth in Savannah. The baby was taken to a hospital under a false name because Elizabeth feared your father would find her.”
“Where is the child now?”
Maria's eyes filled.
“Richard, look at her.”
He stared at her.
“Lily?”
Maria nodded.
“She's Elizabeth's daughter.”
The room became unbearably quiet.
Richard thought of the child standing beneath the chandelier, hugging her rabbit, telling him that her mother could teach him to dance.
He thought of the bracelet, the family resemblance, and the strange warmth he had felt when he first looked into Lily's eyes.
His niece.
The child he had never known existed.
“Why didn't Elizabeth raise her?”
“She did. For a while. But when Lily was still a baby, Elizabeth became seriously ill. She asked me to take Lily somewhere safe while she recovered.”
“What happened to her?”
Maria's voice broke.
“I don't know.”
Richard moved toward the table.
“You don't know?”
“She left to meet someone. She said she would return in two days. She never came back.”
“Why didn't you contact me?”
“Because the last time I saw her, she told me that your father had threatened to take the baby. She said if anything happened to her, I should protect Lily first.”
Richard closed his eyes.
For twenty years, he had imagined Elizabeth had abandoned him.
He had believed she had chosen another life and refused to return.
Instead, she had been trying to protect a child from the same family that claimed to love her.
“Do you have proof?”
Maria reached into her bag and removed the envelope.
She handed him Elizabeth's letter.
Richard read it slowly.
Richard,
If Maria ever brings my daughter to you, it means the world has become too dangerous for her to keep the secret alone.
I know you will be angry that I disappeared. I know Father will tell you that I chose to leave. But I never stopped loving you.
I left because I discovered that our father had been using the family shipping business to move money through companies controlled by men who would hurt anyone who threatened them.
Daniel tried to help me expose it. He disappeared. I don't know whether he is alive.
If I cannot return, please protect my daughter. Her name is Lily.
Richard reached the final line.
And please remember that protecting family does not mean controlling them.
He lowered the letter.
His father's empire had been built on secrets.
And one of those secrets had been standing in his dining room, apologizing for a broken plate.
Richard looked at Maria.
“I will protect her.”
Maria's expression remained guarded.
“Not by deciding everything for her.”
He nodded slowly.
“Not by deciding everything for her.”
For the first time, Maria seemed willing to believe him.
Then Thomas entered the kitchen with an urgent message.
A storage facility outside Savannah had been searched overnight.
May you like
The facility had belonged to Daniel Mercer.
And someone had taken the only box of records that might explain what happened to Elizabeth.
