Chapter 8 - The Flame and the Scalpel

A canister bounced through the open fire door. It hissed once, twice, and then erupted into a blinding white chemical flare, instantly filling the corridor with suffocating phosphorus smoke.
Rocco ripped off his tuxedo jacket, wrapping it around his face to filter the stinging fumes. "Patriarch, crawl to the medical airlock! Now!"
The old man, coughing violently, scrambled across the marble floor on his hands and knees. The arrogance was gone; all that remained was a desperate father trying to reach his dying daughter.
Inside the glass partition, Maya was working by the harsh red light of an emergency chemical stick she had cracked open on the tray. Elena was strapped to the inclined table, her face drenched in sweat, biting down savagely on a rubber guard to keep from screaming.
Maya’s scalpel hovered over Elena's rounded, antiseptic-swabbed belly. "I have no local anesthetic left that hasn't spoiled in the heat, Elena! You’re going to feel this!"
"Do it!" Elena sobbed through the guard, tears streaming into her hair. "Just get my baby out! Don't let them kill him!"
The blade bit into the skin. Elena’s body arched violently against the restraints, a muffled, agonizing shriek tearing from her throat that penetrated straight through the soundproof glass.
Rocco felt every nerve in his body ignite. He didn't just protect this family; he loved Elena. He had loved her since before she married Thomas, burying his feelings deep beneath layers of duty, professional detachment, and stone-cold loyalty. To hear her scream like that broke something wild and untamed inside him.
Through the thick smoke of the corridor, two more figures emerged, wearing gas masks and holding tactical shotguns.
Rocco charged straight into the phosphorus cloud.
He ducked beneath the first shotgun blast, the buckshot disintegrating the plaster behind him. Rocco closed the distance instantly, driving his combat knife upward beneath the edge of the man’s tactical vest, piercing the heart. Before the second guard could pump his weapon, Rocco grabbed the dead man’s shotgun, swung the barrel around, and fired through the smoke point-blank into the second assailant's chest.
Both bodies dropped with heavy, hollow thuds.
Rocco threw the empty shotgun aside and retrieved his sidearm. His eyes burned from the phosphorus, his lungs screaming for oxygen, but he stepped onto the stairwell landing.
Victoria was dragging herself down toward the next floor, clutching her bleeding shoulder. But she wasn't alone. Waiting for her on the lower landing was someone who had managed to enter through the private express shaft.
Julian.

His hands were free. In his grip was the remote detonation console for the estate's fuel reserves stored directly beneath the penthouse suites.
