Chapter 3 - The Iron Threshold

Rocco caught Elena before her knees could strike the ground. The sheer weight of her eight-month pregnancy made the maneuver delicate, but his arms were solid, lifting her against his chest as if she weighed nothing at all. Her hands gripped the lapels of his tuxedo jacket, knuckles white, her breath hot against his collar.
"Breathe," Rocco murmured, moving swiftly past the stunned, silent guests. "Elena, match my steps. Just breathe."
"It hurts, Rocco," she gasped, her eyes dilated with pain and terror. "Something’s wrong. The baby... he hasn't moved since the glass broke."
The grand ballroom doors slammed shut behind them, the heavy bronze bolts sliding into place with a definitive, tomb-like thud. Outside, security was clearing the hall, herding senators, hedge fund magnates, and European nobility into lockdown sectors. Inside the private corridor, silence fell like a heavy velvet curtain.
The Patriarch walked three paces behind them, his cane tapping rhythmically on the hardwood runner. His face was an unreadable mask carved from eighty years of ruthless survival.
"The south suite is fortified," the Patriarch said. "Triple-reinforced doors, independent air filtration, direct elevator to the helipad. Dr. Vance is already waiting inside."
"Not Vance," Rocco said without stopping.
The Patriarch halted. "Dr. Vance has delivered every child in this family for thirty years."
"Dr. Vance’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands cleared two million dollars yesterday morning," Rocco said, turning a corner toward the private elevator. "I run the security sweeps, sir. Not the finance department. I look where people don't want to be seen."
The old man’s jaw twitched, a hairline crack appearing in his monolithic composure. "Then who delivers the child?"
"Me," a voice spoke from the shadows near the elevator bank. A woman stepped forward—slender, wearing scrubs under a dark trench coat, carrying a stainless-steel trauma kit. Dr. Maya Lin, former tactical field surgeon for the navy and Rocco’s trusted contact. "If she’s going into premature labor under stress, we have less than an hour to stop the contractions, or this baby is coming tonight."
Elena groaned, her head tilting back as another contraction tore through her abdomen. "Rocco... Julian said something before the music started. He whispered in my ear while we were taking photos."
Rocco carried her into the elevator, Maya immediately pressing a monitor cuff to Elena’s wrist. The steel doors closed, sealing the four of them in an airtight box humming with hydraulic power.
"What did he whisper, Elena?" Rocco asked gently, resting her on the fold-down leather bench.
Elena swallowed, tears cutting lines through her foundation. "He said... 'The Patriarch wrote two wills. And in the second one, your baby doesn't survive the night.'"

Rocco’s gaze lifted slowly from Elena’s pale face to meet the icy, ancient eyes of the Patriarch standing across the cabin.
