Chapter 6 - THE FRIEND WHO FINALLY SPOKE

Vanessa Cole had spent the previous week insisting that the wedding incident had been misunderstood.

But as the complete video circulated privately among the wedding guests, her confidence began to collapse.

People wanted explanations.

Why had she continued recording?

Why had she laughed?

Why had she posted an edited version that made Lily look responsible?

At first, Vanessa blamed Victoria.

Then she blamed the pressure of the wedding.

Eventually, she stopped answering messages altogether.

Three days later, she contacted Daniel's attorney.

She wanted to provide a statement.

Daniel agreed to meet her in a conference room at his lawyer's office, with Rachel present.

Vanessa arrived wearing dark glasses despite the cloudy weather.

"I know you're angry," she began.

Daniel remained silent.

"I shouldn't have filmed Lily like that."

"No," he replied. "You shouldn't have."

Vanessa removed her glasses.

Her eyes were red.

"Victoria told me Lily was manipulative. She said the girl had been trying to sabotage the relationship for months."

"Did you ever see Lily do anything that justified that claim?"

Vanessa looked down.

"No."

"Then why did you believe it?"

"Because Victoria was my best friend."

The answer sounded weak even to her.

She explained that Victoria had privately complained about Lily for months. At first, the complaints seemed minor. Lily wanted to keep family photographs. She sometimes asked Daniel to read stories that Emily had once read to her. She became quiet when Victoria discussed redecorating the house.

Victoria described these ordinary childhood behaviors as calculated attempts to undermine her authority.

Over time, Vanessa had accepted the story without questioning it.

"She said if Lily kept acting that way, Daniel would eventually have to choose between his daughter and his wife," Vanessa admitted.

Rachel stared at her.

"And you thought that was acceptable?"

"No. I thought Victoria was just venting."

Vanessa reached into her bag and placed her phone on the table.

"I saved our messages. I think you need to see them."

Daniel's attorney reviewed the conversation.

Several messages showed Victoria discussing the planned changes to the household.

Others revealed her intention to use the wedding to establish herself as the family's unquestioned authority.

One message, sent two weeks earlier, stood out.

Victoria: Once the vows are done, Daniel won't want another scandal. He'll tell Lily to apologize if she challenges me.

Vanessa had responded with a laughing emoji.

Daniel looked away.

The wedding hadn't simply exposed Victoria's temper.

She had expected the marriage itself to give her leverage over a child.

"Why are you telling me this now?" he asked.

Vanessa's shoulders sagged.

"Because I watched that video again. I saw Lily's face when Victoria hit her. She wasn't trying to provoke anyone. She was terrified."

She wiped her eyes.

"And I realized I helped make it possible."

Daniel didn't forgive her.

Not that day.

But he accepted the messages and asked his attorney to preserve them.

Before Vanessa left, she paused at the door.

"There's one more thing. Victoria has been telling people that Emily left Daniel emotionally damaged and that Lily inherited the same instability."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"She said that?"

"Yes. She said it privately, but more than once."

After Vanessa left, Daniel sat in silence.

He had spent months believing Victoria understood his grief.

Now he understood that she had studied it, learned where it made him vulnerable, and used it to persuade him that his daughter's love was a problem.

For the first time, he recognized the full cost of his mistake.

He had not only trusted the wrong woman.

He had almost taught his daughter to distrust her own heart.
