Chapter 4 - THE VIDEO THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

By the following morning, the canceled wedding had become the subject of whispered conversations across Daniel's social circle.

Some guests claimed Victoria had suffered a breakdown.

Others said Daniel had abandoned her over a childish argument.

Victoria herself posted a carefully worded statement.

Sometimes, grief makes families complicated. I hope everyone will respect our privacy while we heal.

There was no mention of the slap.

No mention of the broken gift.

No apology to Lily.

Daniel wanted to respond immediately, but Rachel advised him to wait.

"People who manipulate others often rely on emotional reactions," she said. "Don't give her a chance to turn this into another story about you."

Then Vanessa's video appeared online.

She had uploaded a short clip showing Lily entering the bridal suite and holding out the silver box. The recording ended just before the slap.

The caption read:

When a child refuses to accept her father's new beginning.

The response was immediate.

Some viewers criticized Lily's behavior without knowing what had happened. Others questioned why a grown woman would be so threatened by a child's gift.

Daniel watched the clip once.

Then he closed his laptop.

He couldn't bear the thought of thousands of strangers judging his daughter.

But someone had saved the complete recording.

That afternoon, Rachel received a message from a former bridesmaid named Hannah.

Hannah had been standing near the dressing room when the confrontation began. She had heard the argument and later noticed Vanessa editing the video.

She sent Rachel a copy of the uncut footage.

It showed Victoria knocking the gift away.

It showed Lily attempting to explain.

It showed the slap.

And it captured Vanessa laughing afterward.

The video also recorded Victoria's words immediately before the attack.

"Your mother is dead. Stop using her to control everyone!"

Daniel watched it with his jaw clenched.

He wanted to confront Victoria.

Instead, he contacted his attorney and asked him to preserve the footage in case it became relevant to any legal proceedings.

Then he asked Hannah one question.

"Why did you wait?"

Her reply came several minutes later.

Because Victoria told us Lily had serious problems and that Daniel knew about them. I believed her until I saw what happened.

The message continued.

There is something else you should know. Victoria has been telling people that Lily's late mother's belongings are dangerous reminders that need to be removed before Lily can move forward.

Daniel felt anger give way to something colder.

Victoria had not only been shaping Lily's behavior.

She had been shaping the way other adults saw the child.

She had created a version of Lily that made cruelty seem justified.

That evening, Daniel sat beside his daughter while she colored at the kitchen table.

"Sweetheart, has anyone ever told you that loving Mommy means you don't love me?"

Lily looked up.

"No."

"Has anyone told you that you need to stop talking about her?"

She hesitated.

"Victoria said it sometimes."

Daniel's heart tightened.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"She said you were tired of hearing about Mommy."

He reached across the table and took her hand.

"I will never be tired of hearing about your mother."

Lily studied his face as though she needed proof.

Then she quietly asked, "Does that mean I can keep the locket?"

Daniel placed the silver box between them.

"That locket is yours forever."

For the first time since the wedding, Lily smiled.

But Daniel knew the online video had only exposed the surface.

He still needed to discover what Victoria had been planning for their future.

And the answer was hidden in a place he had never thought to look.
