Chapter 7 - The Reckoning at the Docks

The warehouse smelled of rusted steel, salt water, and cold diesel.
Outside, waves from the Atlantic crashed violently against the wooden pilings of Pier 44. Inside, two overhead halogen lamps buzzed loudly, casting stark pools of white light onto the damp concrete floor.
Jimmy Cole was sweating through his wool suit despite the sub-zero temperatures. Beside him, Frank Vance—the burly loan shark—was kneeling on the concrete, his hands zip-tied behind his back, his nose bleeding profusely from a recent encounter with Marcus’s baton.
Adrian sat on a metal folding chair at the edge of the light, slowly cleaning the dried marinara sauce from his gold watch with a white handkerchief.
"You're skimming, Frank," Adrian said, his voice flat, conversational.
"Boss, please! It was a side hustle!" Vance sputtered, spitting blood onto the floor. "Julian owed me ten grand on college football! I didn't know the broad was connected to you! I swear on my mother’s grave!"
"She isn't connected to me," Adrian replied, slipping the watch back onto his wrist. He looked up, his grey eyes piercing Vance like frozen steel. "She is a civilian. An innocent mother raising a child on tips. And you sent three armed degenerates to terrorize her at her workplace."
Jimmy Cole stepped forward, hands raised placatingly. "Mr. Hale, Adrian, listen... Frank stepped out of line. I admit it. I take full responsibility. We’ll wipe the debt clean. Julian gets a pass. The girl won't ever hear from us again."
Adrian stood up. Jimmy Cole instinctively took two steps back.
"The girl’s debt is already paid," Adrian said, walking slowly toward Vance. "I bought it. Julian’s debt now belongs to Hale Holdings. Which means Julian answers to me, not you."
Adrian stopped directly in front of Vance. He reached down, grabbed Vance by his leather collar, and dragged him up until their eyes were inches apart.
"Here is what happens next, Frank," Adrian whispered. "You are going to take every penny of the ten thousand dollars you extorted from other working-class families this month, and you are going to deposit it into an anonymous trust account that Marcus will provide. Then, you are leaving this state. If I see your face in my city after tomorrow morning, I will feed you to the crabs off Pier 12. Do we understand each other?"
"Yes! Yes, Mr. Hale! God, yes!" Vance sobbed.
Adrian dropped him like a sack of wet flour. He turned to Jimmy Cole.
"Find Julian," Adrian ordered. "The boy's father. I want to know who he’s running with, who he’s talking to, and why he ran so fast. A man doesn't abandon his family over ten thousand dollars unless he’s running from something much bigger."
"I’ll put every ear on the street to work tonight, Adrian," Jimmy promised, his voice shaking.
"Good. Don't disappoint me twice, Jimmy."

Adrian turned and walked out of the warehouse, his long black coat billowing in the freezing Atlantic gale.
