Chapter 20 - The Midnight Reckoning

The gunfire ceased. The only sound remaining in the Portsmouth rail yard was the hiss of burning rubber, the crackle of burning diesel, and the soft patter of freezing rain against the steel containers.

Adrian's private security team moved efficiently through the yard, securing the perimeter, collecting spent brass, and prepping the extraction vehicles. The entire Boston Syndicate leadership present at the docks had been wiped off the map in under seven minutes.

A nondescript gray van pulled up near the perimeter fence. The sliding door opened, and Clara stepped out into the misty drizzle, her eyes searching the smoking ruins with frantic, desperate urgency.

When she spotted Adrian walking toward her through the haze—covered in soot, his jacket torn, but walking tall and unbroken—her knees buckled with overwhelming relief.

"Adrian!" she cried out, running toward him across the frozen gravel.

Adrian met her halfway. He caught her in his arms, lifting her off her feet as she buried her face into his neck, soaking his jacket with her tears.

"It's done, Clara," Adrian whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion he had never allowed himself to feel in all his thirty-eight years. "O’Connor is gone. Jimmy Cole is gone. The Syndicate's ledger is in the hands of the Federal Justice Department. You and Leo are free. No more running. No more looking over your shoulder."

Clara pulled back, looking into his eyes, her hands framing his face. "And you, Adrian? Are you free?"

"For the first time in my life," Adrian smiled gently. "If you'll still have me at your table."

Clara laughed through her tears, leaning up to kiss him deeply on the lips, sealing a future they had both fought through blood and fire to claim.

Behind them, Leo poked his head out of the van, holding his favorite comic book, smiling at the sight of his mother and the tall, kind man who had saved them.

The nightmare was finally over. The sun was breaking through the coastal fog, casting golden ribbons of morning light over the Atlantic horizon.

Then, a low, rhythmic clapping echoed from the deep shadows of the abandoned warehouse behind them.

*Clap. Clap. Clap.*

Adrian’s instincts screamed. He instantly spun around, pushing Clara behind his back, his hand dropping to the sidearm at his belt.

From the darkness of the warehouse loading dock, a man stepped out into the morning light.

He wore a tailored Italian wool coat. He was lean, handsome, with sharp, calculating gray eyes and a crooked, familiar smirk on his clean-shaven face.

A high-powered red laser beam snapped on from the shadows, painting a glowing crimson dot directly onto the center of Clara’s chest.

Clara gasped, her blood turning to liquid nitrogen. Her vision blurred, her entire reality shattering into a million jagged pieces.

"Hello, Clara," the man said smoothly, adjusting the cuffs of his cashmere sleeve with cold amusement. "Did you really think a few cheap mobsters could finish me off five years ago?"

Clara could barely breathe the name that had haunted her nightmares.

"Julian...?" she choked out.

May you like

Julian Bennett smiled, his eyes completely hollow, as six laser sights suddenly converged from the catwalks directly onto Adrian Hale's heart.

"You took care of my debt, Mr. Hale," Julian said, cocking his head with a deadly, mocking grin. "Now step away from my wife and son... or watch them die right in front of you."
