Chapter 10 - The Broken Truth

Roman stood motionless under the flickering garage lights, the rain soaking through his shoulders. He didn't step closer. He kept his distance, knowing that right now, in her eyes, he was the devil incarnate.

"Get in my car, Claire," he said quietly. "It isn't safe here. Doran’s crew will be back."

"Don't touch me!" she screamed, her voice cracking with pure agony. She pulled herself up against the pillar, her legs shaking so violently she could barely stand. "Don't you dare come near me! You’re the butcher from Pier 17! You burned that warehouse! You killed Elena! You crushed Mateo!"

Roman closed his eyes. Every word was an executioner's blade, and he didn't raise a single shield against them.

"I know," he whispered.

"You knew all along?" she cried, her hands tearing at her own hair, hysterical with grief and rage. "You hired me... you let me clean your house, you let me bow my head to you, just to laugh at me? Just to play god with our lives?"

"No!" Roman’s voice roared through the empty parking level, filled with such raw, agonizing pain that it stopped Claire in her tracks.

Roman opened his eyes. For the first time, Claire saw tears glinting in the crime boss’s gaze.

"I didn't know who you were when I hired you," Roman said, his voice dropping into a broken, ragged whisper. "I use five different shell agencies to staff that house. You were just a name on an application. But two nights ago, I had you followed because Doran was hunting me. I thought you were selling secrets."

He took a slow step forward, falling to both knees right onto the cold, wet concrete five feet in front of her—a posture of absolute, unconditional surrender that no living soul had ever seen Roman Torrio assume.

"I followed you to that room, Claire," he choked out, staring up at her. "I saw Mateo’s chart. I saw the date. November 14th."

Claire stared at him, her chest heaving, stunned into silence by the sight of the city’s most feared man kneeling in the dirt before her.

"I ordered that fire," Roman said, his voice breaking. "I was told the docks were clear. When I found out about your sister... about the boy... I hunted down the man who lied to me and killed him with my bare hands. But it didn't change what I did. For five years, I’ve looked in the mirror and seen a monster who deserves to burn in hell."

He reached into his breast pocket with agonizing slowness, pulled out his gun, and set it on the floor between them, sliding it toward her sneakers.

"I didn't give Mateo that machine to buy your forgiveness," Roman whispered, his head bowed. "I gave it to him because he deserves to walk. If you want to pull that trigger, Claire... I won't stop you. I’ll welcome it. But let me get you and the boy somewhere safe first. Because Doran won't stop until he burns everything I care about to the ground."

Claire looked down at the heavy black weapon resting at her feet. Her hands shook. Her sister’s face flashed before her eyes. Five years of poverty, of crying in hospital bathrooms, of counting pennies for bread, of watching Mateo scream in agony as the doctors reset his broken hips.

She reached down and picked up the gun.
