Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail

Claire arrived at the hospital at 7:30 p.m., her body aching from twelve hours of polishing silver, scrubbing bathrooms, and changing bed sheets at the Torrio estate.
When she walked onto the fourth floor, she immediately felt the shift in atmosphere. The nurses weren't casually chatting at the reception desk. Dr. Chen, the chief of pediatric neurology, was standing outside Room 412 holding a thick digital tablet, his face flushed with excitement.
"Claire!" Dr. Chen called out, rushing toward her. "Where have you been? We’ve been trying to call your cell phone!"
Claire’s heart dropped into her stomach. Her first instinct was pure terror. "Mateo? Is he having a seizure? Did his vitals drop?"
"No! No, Claire, calm down," Dr. Chen said, catching her by the shoulders. "He’s fine. In fact, he’s better than fine. An hour ago, an anonymous medical endowment was established under the Bellweather Trust. It fully covers Mateo’s entire rehabilitation, his surgeries, his private room, and five years of outpatient therapy."
Claire went utterly rigid. "What?"
"And that’s not all," Dr. Chen continued, turning the tablet toward her. "A courier delivered a specialized bionic exoskeleton from Zurich. Claire, this is military-grade pediatric tech. There are only four of these units in the entire United States. The donor paid for the technician’s salary to oversee Mateo’s fittings for the next eighteen months."
Claire stared at the screen. The numbers, the dollar signs, the clinical approvals—it was a fortune. Over two million dollars.
Her blood ran cold.
"Who?" Claire whispered, her voice trembling not with joy, but with absolute dread. "Who sent this?"
"The donor requested complete anonymity," Dr. Chen said, smiling warmly. "The paperwork came through a shell corporation called *Aegis Holdings* out of Delaware. Claire, this is a miracle! Mateo is going to walk again!"
*Aegis Holdings.*
Claire felt all the air leave her lungs.
Two months ago, while dusting the high bookshelves in Roman Vance’s private study, she had knocked over a brass stationery holder. A corporate tax document had spilled across the floor. The entity listed on the top header, printed in stark black serif type, had been *Aegis Holdings LLC*.
She had thought it was just another faceless corporate shell for his real estate ventures.
He knew.
Roman Vance knew about Mateo. He knew where she went at night. And now he was throwing blood money at her nephew like a king tossing crumbs to a peasant in the dirt.
A wave of nausea and incandescent fury swept over her. She pushed past Dr. Chen without another word, running toward Mateo’s room.
When she burst through the door, Mateo was sitting up, laughing as a specialist in black scrubs carefully adjusted a sleek, matte-black carbon brace around his small calf. On the bed lay an expensive leather keychain shaped like a dinosaur.
"Aunt Claire! Look!" Mateo shouted, pointing with pure delight. "The scary man came! He gave me raptor legs!"

Claire gripped the doorframe until her knuckles turned snow-white.
