Chapter 11 - The Unopened Envelope

Ethan froze.
He knelt down, expecting it to be an old hair clip or an expired pen that had slipped behind the bed years ago.
Instead, his fingers brushed against a thick, heavy manila envelope taped tightly to the backside of the headboard with industrial packing tape. It had been intentionally hidden, tucked into a recessed hollow of the wood where nobody would ever see it unless the entire bed frame was disassembled.
Ethan peeled the yellowed tape away slowly.
Written across the front of the envelope was not Sophie’s handwriting.
The script was sharp, frantic, and unmistakably adult. It was labeled in dark black marker:
*TO BE OPENED ONLY IF THE EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT FAILS.*
Ethan’s brow furrowed. Beneath the bold text was a date.
He stared at the numbers, his blood suddenly turning to ice.
The date written on the envelope was *October 14th, 2021*.
Sophie had been officially declared brain dead and passed away in the Saint Jude intensive care unit on *October 11th, 2021*. Three days earlier.
"What the hell..." Ethan whispered, his chest tightening as his breath caught in his throat.
With shaking fingers, he ripped open the sealed clasp of the envelope.
Inside was a heavy brass key stamped with the logo of the First National Bank of Oakridge—a safety deposit box key numbered 414.
Beneath the key lay an official legal document from a private medical research clinic in Chicago, stamped in red ink: *CONFIDENTIAL NON-DISCLOSURE AGREEMENT.*
And stapled to the document was a handwritten letter addressed directly to Daniel, written on official hospital stationery, signed by Dr. Robert Mercer—the lead physician who had overseen Sophie’s final clinical trial.
Ethan unfolded the letter. His eyes scanned the first two sentences:
*Daniel,*
*If you are reading this, the protocol did not work as we hoped, and the public records have been filed as agreed. But as your doctor and your friend, I cannot take this money without telling you the truth about what was actually in the vials, and why Sophie’s autopsy was sealed before Sarah could see the results...*
Ethan heard heavy footsteps coming up the stairs.
May you like
"Ethan?" Daniel’s cheerful voice called out from the hallway. "Hey son, you want burgers or pizza tonight? I'm heading out to grab dinner."
Ethan stood frozen in the center of the yellow room, the confidential medical document trembling in his hands, staring at the bedroom doorway as his father’s shadow approached.
