Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in the Corridor

I slammed the flash drive into my pocket, shut down the computer, and grabbed General Pickles from Meadow's bed. I walked out of that house and knew with complete certainty that I would never set foot inside it as Dennis Hayes’s wife ever again.
When I arrived back at the pediatric surgical wing, the atmosphere had shifted dramatically.
The double doors leading into the ward were monitored by two armed hospital security officers. As I rounded the corner, I spotted Dennis pacing the corridor near the vending machines, his phone pressed firmly to his ear. Chloe was sitting on a low vinyl bench nearby, nervously chewing her acrylic nails down to the quick.
When Dennis saw me walking toward him, he ended the call abruptly and stepped directly into my path.
"Claire," he said, lowering his voice into that smooth, condescending tone he used whenever he wanted to manage me. "We need to talk right now. The social worker just came out and told me I wasn't allowed into my daughter’s room. Did you set that up?"
I stopped two feet away from him. I didn't blink. I didn't flinch.
"I didn't set it up, Dennis. The doctors did. Because they know what a monster looks like."
Dennis’s face hardened. He took a predatory step forward, invading my personal space, his breath smelling faintly of coffee and mint gum. "You listen to me, you crazy bitch. You are blowing this completely out of proportion. Meadow was confused. I spoke to an attorney while you were gone. If you try to weaponize our daughter's concussion to start some pathetic custody war, I will bury you. I have resources you don't even know about. I will take Meadow, and you won't see her until she’s eighteen."
Chloe stood up from the bench, looking nervously around the empty hallway. "Dennis... keep your voice down..."
"Shut up, Chloe," I said, without even turning my head to look at her.
Chloe flinched as if I had slapped her across the face.
I looked Dennis dead in the eye. "You mentioned your resources, Dennis. Are you talking about the four hundred and fifty thousand dollars you stole from Meadow’s trust fund? Or are you talking about the condo in Miami under your and Chloe’s names?"
Dennis’s jaw dropped. The color completely drained from his face, leaving behind a sickly, grayish pallor.
Chloe let out a strangled squeak from behind him. "Claire... how... how do you..."
"And as for your little performance about Meadow tripping in high heels," I continued, leaning in until my voice was a razor-sharp whisper directly in Dennis's ear, "the cloud backup saved the hallway camera footage at 1:52 p.m."
May you like
Dennis froze. His pupils dilated in pure, unadulterated terror.
"I have the video, Dennis," I whispered. "I saw you push her. I saw Chloe run out in my bedsheet. And I've already uploaded copies to three separate secure servers."
