Chapter 10 - The Ambush at Sunrise

Meadow was sitting up in bed when I walked back into the room.

Her little face looked exhausted, but the suffocating terror that had lived in her eyes for the last five hours was finally gone. In her hands, she held the drawing paper the child life specialist had brought her.

I held up General Pickles.

Her eyes lit up. "Pickles!"

I walked over, carefully wrapping my arm around her good side, pressing my face into her hair. The familiar smell of strawberry shampoo and childhood innocence washed over me, and for the first time since that terrible phone call, a single tear of relief slipped down my cheek.

"He’s never coming back, baby," I whispered into her hair. "Neither of them are ever coming near you again. I promise you on my life."

An hour later, Detective Lin entered the room with the child advocacy specialist. They took Meadow’s statement slowly, gently, recording every word with a specialized audio recorder. Meadow spoke clearly, describing Dennis’s threats, his violent shove, and the exact words he had used before pushing her.

With Meadow’s testimony, the high-definition security footage I provided, and the medical trauma reports from Doctor Martinez, Dennis’s bail was set at five million dollars during an emergency arraignment the following morning. Chloe was held on a half-million-dollar bond as a flight risk.

The police had already frozen the offshore accounts, issuing a preliminary seizure order on the Miami property. The betrayal that had threatened to tear my entire world apart had instead forged an impenetrable shield around my daughter and me.

By 7:00 a.m. the next day, the sun was breaking through the thick morning fog over Puget Sound, casting golden ribbons of light across Meadow's hospital bed. Her vitals were stable. The secondary CT scan had cleared her of internal bleeding.

"Can we go home soon, Mommy?" Meadow asked, stroking the frayed ear of General Pickles.

"Soon, my love," I said softly, kissing her forehead. "Just a couple more days to make sure you're all healed up."

My phone buzzed on the bedside table.

It was a text from Detective Lin: *Search warrant on the house is complete. We recovered his personal laptop and the physical safe from the floorboards in his master closet. Mrs. Hayes... you need to come down to the precinct. There’s something in this safe you need to see for yourself.*

A knot of dread tightened in my stomach. What else could Dennis possibly have been hiding?
