Chapter 5 - The Bank Comes Knocking

When the heavy wrought-iron security gates clicked shut behind Margaret’s luxury SUV, the silence that fell over the estate was breathtaking. For fifteen months, that house had felt like an occupied fortress, filled with Margaret’s constant barking orders, Vanessa’s loud speakerphone calls, and Daniel’s simmering, resentful presence.

Now, it was just me, the quiet hum of the air conditioning, and Arthur Finch.

"We need to move quickly, Lauren," Arthur said, spreading out a series of legal binders across the kitchen island. "Daniel has already made desperate moves. When he realized the King County deed couldn't be altered without your biometric signature, he attempted an end-run through Richard’s supply firm."

"Explain," I said, pouring two glasses of iced water.

"Richard Whitmore took out a bridge loan from an aggressive mezzanine lender downtown—Apex Commercial Capital—for two point two million dollars," Finch explained, tapping a notarized contract with his gold pen. "Daniel signed as a personal guarantor, falsely listing your trust’s commercial properties on 4th Avenue as unencumbered assets owned by Whitmore Enterprises. Apex doesn't operate like a traditional bank. When they discover they’ve been defrauded, they won't wait for a civil court date."

Meanwhile, three miles away at an extended-stay hotel on the outskirts of the city, the Whitmore family was tearing itself apart.

"What do you mean the cards are declined?!" Margaret screamed at Daniel in the crowded hotel lobby, her voice drawing stares from business travelers and desk clerks alike. "Try the black card! Try the business credit line!"

"It's all frozen, Mom!" Daniel roared, completely shattering his calm exterior. He slapped the registration desk with both palms, startling the young clerk behind the counter. "Lauren filed an emergency motion of financial injunction this afternoon! Every single account tied to my Social Security number is locked pending a forensic audit!"

Vanessa was sitting on her mountain of Louis Vuitton luggage in the driveway, crying loudly into her phone. "Richard, you have to do something! Danny got us kicked out! Lauren threw water in Mom’s face and now we’re homeless!"

On the other end of the line, Richard Whitmore’s voice sounded strangled and panicked. "Tell Danny to get down to the warehouse right now! Apex Capital has two debt collection agents standing in my front office with a repossession warrant for all the machinery! If we don't have six hundred thousand dollars by tomorrow morning, they're seizing every truck we own!"

"Where are we supposed to get six hundred thousand dollars?!" Vanessa wailed.

"From the architect," Richard growled through the receiver. "Tell Danny he better get on his knees and beg her before we all end up in federal prison."
