Chapter 10 - Foreclosure and Arrest

The end came with the swift, unyielding finality of an iron gavel.

By Friday at noon, as promised, the commercial locksmiths arrived at the gated estate. Officer Hayes stood guard as the heavy steel tumblers were replaced with encrypted digital biometric deadbolts.

Down in the industrial district, three federal cruisers and two county sheriff squad cars pulled into the gravel lot of Whitmore Construction. Richard tried to flee out the back loading dock carrying a duffel bag stuffed with eighty thousand dollars in untraceable cash, but two federal agents tackled him into the mud before he could even reach the fence line.

Daniel was arrested as he walked out of Finch’s office building, his hands cuffed behind his back in plain view of the lunchtime crowds on 5th Avenue. News cameras from the local television affiliates flashed incessantly, capturing the disgraced young entrepreneur hanging his head in shame.

And Margaret?

Margaret’s leased Mercedes was repossessed that afternoon while she was sitting in a nail salon trying to salvage her shattered composure. When she refused to surrender the keys to the tow truck operator, she was cited for disorderly conduct and left stranded on the sidewalk with her purse and a half-finished manicure.

With their personal accounts seized to satisfy Apex Capital’s fraud liens, Margaret and Vanessa were forced into a run-down two-bedroom apartment in a neighborhood Margaret had once spent years mocking. Vanessa’s social media accounts were inundated with thousands of mocking comments after the gala video leaked online, forcing her to delete every profile and take a job as a checkout clerk at an outlet clothing store.

I returned to my home that evening as the sun was setting over Puget Sound, casting a warm, brilliant amber glow across the water. The house was clean. The air was fresh. The toxic rot that the Whitmore family had brought into my father’s sanctuary had been eradicated completely.

For the first time in nearly two years, I sat on my terrace, drank a glass of wine, and felt completely at peace.

The Whitmores were gone. The trust was secure. The nightmare was over.

Or so I believed.
