Chapter 7 - The Shattered Illusion

The air in the room was instantly sucked out.
Ryan blinked, his cocky smirk freezing into a bizarre, unnatural grimace. “What? What are you talking about? That’s impossible. Look again!”
Denise rushed forward, her polite facade dropping instantly. She practically snatched at the papers in the officer’s hands. “Let me see that! That’s a mistake! My son bought this penthouse! He’s an executive! He pays the mortgage!”
“There is no mortgage, ma'am,” Officer Miller stated, holding the papers firmly out of her reach. “This two-point-four-million-dollar property was purchased outright, in cash, three years ago. The sole purchaser, sole title holder, and sole deed owner is Elena Thorne Vance.”
Miller turned to look at me, a glimmer of profound respect in his tired eyes. “Purchased two full years before your marriage, correct, Mrs. Vance?”
“Correct,” I said, resting my weight against the desk, my voice ringing clear and cold through the room. “Paid for using the proceeds from the patent sale of my architectural seismic-damping system, along with my personal savings. Ryan has never contributed a single dollar toward the purchase, the property taxes, or the monthly HOA fees. In fact, his name is nowhere on the title because he signed an ironclad pre-marital property waiver before I ever let him move in.”
Ryan’s face turned an ash-gray color, as if the blood had suddenly drained out of his entire circulatory system. “Elena... what... what is this? We’re married! Everything is community property! You’re my wife!”
“Not this condo, it isn't,” Officer Vance interjected sharply, stepping between Ryan and me. “In this state, real estate purchased prior to marriage with non-commingled, separate assets remains one hundred percent separate property. You are not an owner, Mr. Mercer. You are, at best, a guest.”
“No!” Denise screamed, her voice hitting a shrill, hysterical pitch that grated on the ears. “That’s fraud! That’s an outrage! Ryan is the man of the house! What kind of deceitful snake keeps her own home from her husband? She tricked him! She manipulated my boy!”
“Shut up, Denise,” I snapped, the quiet, subservient wife they thought they had broken vanishing entirely. “You came into my home uninvited at seven in the morning. You criticized my food, you tried to hand me a chore list as if I were your unpaid servant, and then you deliberately poured boiling liquid on my flesh.”

“I didn't do it!” Denise wailed, turning to Officer Miller with wild, desperate eyes. “The bowl slipped! It was an accident!”
“Officer Vance,” I said calmly, pointing toward the subtle black dome mounted in the crown molding above the study door, and the matching one visible in the hallway leading back to the kitchen. “This is a smart-home installation designed by my firm. Every square foot of the common living area is monitored by 4K ultra-high-definition security cameras with active audio recording. The servers upload directly to an off-site cloud vault every sixty seconds.”
