Chapter 3 - The Mercer Law

Behind Ryan, Denise sat comfortably in the leather dining chair, folding her hands neatly over her floral blouse. Her lips curled into a thin, satisfied smirk as she watched her son strike me. There was no horror in her eyes, no maternal instinct to de-escalate. Only the quiet, predatory pleasure of a woman watching her territory being marked.

“Ryan is right, dear,” Denise purred, smoothing down her napkin. “A wife must be molded. My late husband broke me in the same way, and it made me a better woman. You modern girls think a university degree and a high salary make you men. But in this family, a Mercer man rules his castle.”

The stinging in my face was nothing compared to the white-hot agony radiating from my legs. The blistering skin was peeling, raw nerve endings exposed to the air. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, but somewhere beneath the panic and the pain, an icy stillness settled over my soul.

They thought I was helpless.

They thought that because I had loved Ryan quietly, paid for his lavish lifestyle, and tolerated his mother’s passive-aggressive barbs for twelve months, I was made of glass. They truly believed I was trapped in their twisted version of a patriarchal hierarchy.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered, looking down at the Italian porcelain tiles beneath my feet.

Ryan chuckled darkly, lowering his hand. “Louder, Elena. Let my mother hear how sorry you are for disrespecting our family.”

“I’m sorry,” I said, raising my head just enough to meet Denise’s venomous gaze. “I’m sorry you think you’re ever going to walk out of this room without handcuffs.”

Ryan’s face darkened with rage. He lunged forward, his arm swinging back to strike me again. But this time, I didn't freeze.

I grabbed the heavy cast-iron skillet resting on the rear burner—still warm from frying his eggs earlier—and raised it like a shield. The heavy metal caught Ryan squarely on the forearm with a brutal, hollow thud.

Ryan shrieked in pain, stumbling back and clutching his bruised arm. “You crazy b***h! You assaulted me!”

I didn’t waste a single breath. Ignoring the searing agony in my legs, I bolted toward the front entryway. Ryan lunged after me, but the grease from the spilled soup on the dining room floor caused his bare feet to slip, sending him crashing down onto his hip with a loud curse.

I hit the red button on the master security panel by the front door.

*“Emergency silent alarm activated. Local authorities notified,”* the automated female voice chimed through the ceiling speakers.

Denise stood up, her smug expression suddenly faltering. “Ryan! What did she do? What is that noise?”

“She called the cops,” Ryan groaned, hauling himself up from the floor, his eyes wild with fury. Then he looked at his mother, and a sickening grin spread across his face. “Good. Let them come. Let them see what this psycho just did to her husband in his own home.”
