Chapter 2 - The Audit Trail

Upstairs in the master suite, the morning sun was streaming through the bay windows, mocking the nightmare that had just unfolded downstairs.

I locked the bedroom door behind me, stripping off the silk robe Margaret had gifted me—a garment meant to symbolize my entry into their gilded cage—and dropped it straight into the wastebasket. I pulled on a pair of dark trousers, a crisp white button-down shirt, and my favorite leather blazer.

My phone buzzed immediately. It was Marcus Vance, senior partner at Vance & Sterling Corporate Litigation, and the man who had managed my personal assets and corporate holdings for the last eight years.

“Clara,” Marcus’s voice was crisp and professional. “Your text came through. The preliminary injunctions have been filed with the federal district court. Are we executing phase two?”

“Execute all of it, Marcus,” I said, pacing across the hardwood floor. “Freeze every corporate account tied to Harrington Logistics. Pull back the lines of credit we extended to Charles’s real estate developments, and notify the board of directors that the personal guarantees backing their upcoming commercial expansion have been withdrawn.”

There was a brief pause on the line, followed by the sound of typing. “That’s going to trigger a catastrophic liquidity crisis for them within forty-eight hours. They’ve been using personal guarantees from your independent tech firm to keep their shipping empire afloat for months. Do you want me to leave a buffer?”

“Did Daniel leave a buffer when he hit me across the face this morning because breakfast was five minutes late?” I asked quietly.

“...Understood,” Marcus said, his tone sharpening. “Phase two is live. Assets are locked. What’s your next move?”

“I’m packing my bags,” I replied. “And then I’m going to watch them realize that the empire they’re so proud of was never actually theirs.”
