Chapter 6 - The Freezing of the Empire

By 1:30 PM, the local Philadelphia news outlets were running the story on a continuous loop: *Mother of Logistics CEO Arrested at Center City Investment Firm Following Bizarre Lobby Rampage.*

The footage of Marjorie Halston being marched in handcuffs into the back of a police cruiser, screaming obscenities with her wig askew, went instantly viral on TikTok and local news networks.

At the Halston Logistics headquarters in an industrial park near the Philadelphia airport, absolute chaos erupted.

Six flatbed tow trucks, escorted by four marked cruisers from the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Department, blocked the entry gates. Deputized civil enforcement officers were affixing bright neon-orange seizure notices to the front doors and padlocking the primary fuel depots.

Derek stood in the center of his executive office, clutching an unlabelled bottle of bourbon, listening to his corporate phone ring continuously.

Every line was blinking.

Line 1 was his primary fuel supplier, informing him that his commercial credit line had been terminated.

Line 2 was his lead dispatch supervisor, announcing that twenty-four long-haul drivers had just parked their rigs on the side of Interstate 95 because their corporate fuel cards were declining at the pumps.

Line 3 was his personal bank, notifying him that his checking and savings accounts had been placed on administrative hold pursuant to a court-ordered asset freeze initiated by Northstar Ridge Capital.

"No, no, no..." Derek whimpered, his hair disheveled, his expensive tie shredded at the knot. "You can't freeze my personal accounts! That's my money! That's not company funds!"

"Mr. Halston," the bank manager’s voice came through the speaker with clinical indifference. "Your personal assets were cross-collateralized under the 2022 master equipment lease. Northstar Ridge has executed an expedited judgment against all personal guarantors. Good day."

The line went dead.

Derek hurled his glass against the wall. The crystal shattered, splashing dark amber bourbon across a framed photo of him shaking hands with the mayor.

He sat down heavily in his swivel chair, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold his phone.

He needed leverage. He needed something—anything—to force Brynn to stop the bleeding.

He opened his personal laptop and began desperately digging through three years of archived emails, text backups, and personal photos. He had spent three years believing Brynn was a simple girl from a working-class background. There had to be something. An old tax discrepancy. An embarrassing photo. An ex-boyfriend. A secret debt.

"Everyone has dirt," Derek snarled through clenched teeth, his bloodshot eyes scanning the folders. "Nobody is clean. Nobody."

He pulled up an old cloud backup of Brynn’s personal laptop that she had once synced to his home Wi-Fi.

He opened a folder marked *Calloway Estate - Confidential.*

Derek’s breath caught in his throat.

File after file opened before his eyes:

* *Calloway-Vance Foundation: Endowment Portfolio - $140,000,000.*

* *Wharton School of Business: Endowed Chair of Entrepreneurship (Donated by B. Calloway).*

* *Patents: Automated Logistics Freight Allocation Architecture (Sold to Apex Global - $210,000,000).*

Derek’s jaw went slack. The whiskey bottle slipped from his numb fingers, rolling across the carpet.

She wasn't just a partner at Northstar Ridge.

She was the creator of the very technology his entire logistics company was built upon. The tracking software Derek had licensed from a third-party vendor two years ago? It was Brynn’s original proprietary patent. He had been paying monthly licensing royalties directly to an intellectual property trust she owned without ever knowing it.

She hadn't just beaten him today.

She had owned him from the very beginning.

His office door was kicked open.

Derek jumped, spinning around in his chair. "Who’s there?!"

Two plainclothes detectives from the Major Crimes Division stepped into the room, flanked by two armed sheriff's deputies.

"Derek Halston?" Detective Miller asked, pulling a leather badge from his coat.

Derek backed against the window, his chest heaving. "What is this? My mother... my mother was just confused! She didn't do anything!"

"We're not here for your mother, Mr. Halston," Detective Miller said, drawing his handcuffs. "We have an arrest warrant issued by the Philadelphia Municipal Court. You are being charged with aggravated assault, domestic battery, and felony witness tampering."

"Assault?!" Derek screamed, his voice turning into an octave of sheer terror. "She threw a bucket of filthy water on me! Look at my skin! I was the victim! She assaulted me in my own mother's house!"

Detective Miller looked at the swollen bruise visible in the high-resolution crime scene photos attached to his clipboard, then looked back at Derek’s completely unblemished, terrified face.

"You can tell that to the magistrate, Mr. Halston," Miller said coldly. "Hands behind your back. Now."

As the steel cuffs clicked around Derek’s wrists, his phone buzzed on the desk.

A single notification appeared on the screen from the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office:

*Notice of Sheriff’s Sale: 1422 South Juniper Street (Property of Marjorie Halston) scheduled for public auction in 30 days.*

Derek let out a broken, animalistic sob as the deputies hauled him out through the glass doors of his former kingdom.
