Chapter 4 - The Dismantling

The silence in the boardroom was suffocating.

Derek stood paralyzed, his mouth opening and closing like a fish dragged onto dry sand. His mind visibly struggled to connect the woman he had slapped in a dingy hallway thirty-six hours ago with the billionaire executive seated before eight stony-faced corporate killers.

"You're... you're a freelance writer," Derek stammered, pointing a shaking finger at her. "You rent an apartment in Queen Village. You drive a beat-up Civic! Brad, tell her—this is some kind of sick joke. Did you hire actors? Did you break in here?!"

"Mr. Halston," Marcus Kane's voice rang out like a crack of thunder. "If you raise your voice at our Managing Partner again, security will remove your teeth before they remove your person."

Two burly private security officers stepped out from the shadows near the back wall, their hands folded formally over their tactical vests.

Derek swallowed hard, his face turning an ash-gray hue. "Brynn... baby... what is this? Why didn't you tell me?"

"Why didn't I tell you?" Brynn echoed, leaning forward. The light caught the deep purple contusion across her cheek. Several senior partners shifted uncomfortably in their seats, their eyes narrowing with disgust as they looked at Derek.

"I wanted to see who Derek Halston was when he thought no one was watching," Brynn said, her voice completely devoid of emotion. "I wanted to know if you loved a woman, or if you loved an asset. And on Saturday night, at precisely eleven-seventeen, you answered that question."

"Brynn, that was a misunderstanding!" Derek rushed out, sweat suddenly beading across his forehead, soaking his stiff collar. "My mother was stressed! The wedding was overwhelming, my friends were out of line, I had too much to drink—you know how alcohol affects me! I lost my temper! That wasn't me!"

"It was entirely you," Brynn said.

She tapped the glass screen of her tablet. Immediately, the ninety-inch interactive display behind her flickered to life.

It didn't show Derek’s freight projections.

It showed the forensic medical scans taken by Dr. Chen at one o'clock Sunday morning. High-definition images of the handprint burned into her cheek. Macrophotography of her torn scalp follicles. And beside it, the video Brynn had captured on her phone: Derek soaked in gray, filthy mop water, lunging forward with bared teeth, snarling *'I will ruin you'* while his mother screamed profanities in the background.

Brad Higgins turned dead-white and took three steps away from Derek, distancing himself physically from the blast radius.

"Furthermore," Brynn continued smoothly, tapping the screen again to reveal a cascading waterfall of forensic accounting sheets, "let’s discuss your six-million-dollar investment proposal."

Derek looked at the numbers, his knees trembling. "How... how do you have those files?"

"I own the senior debt on your primary lender, Apex Mezzanine," Brynn said casually, resting her chin on her hand. "I purchased their paper at seven o'clock this morning for four million dollars cash. Which means, Derek, you no longer owe Apex Mezzanine. You owe Northstar Ridge Capital."

Derek’s breath hitched. "Brynn... please. We’re married. We took vows before God. Everything I have is yours, everything you have is mine! We’re partners!"

"We aren't married," Elena Vance spoke up, rising from her seat beside Brynn. She slid a thick manila folder across the mahogany table until it tapped against Derek's chest.

Derek looked down numbly. "What's this?"

"That is an emergency annulment order, signed at eight-fifteen this morning by Judge Harrison in the Court of Common Pleas," Elena stated with surgical precision. "Granted under grounds of gross fraudulent misrepresentation of character, undisclosed liabilities, and immediate physical battery. You are not a husband, Mr. Halston. You are an adjudicated assailant."

"You can't do this!" Derek shrieked, his composure shattering entirely. Panic and fury fought across his features. "You tricked me! You lived a lie for three years! You played me for a fool!"

"You played yourself, Derek," Brynn said, her voice dropping into a register that made the entire room hold its breath. "You thought I was weak. You thought because I didn't brag about my bank account, I was disposable. You thought that putting a ring on my finger gave you and your mother the right to turn me into an obedient servant."

She stood up.

She didn't shout. She didn't slam her hands on the table. She simply towered over him with the effortless gravity of absolute authority.

"Your request for six million dollars in equity financing is denied," Brynn declared.

Derek’s chest heaved. "Brynn... if you don't give me that loan, Apex... Northstar... you'll call the notes! My business will be destroyed!"

"Your business is already destroyed," Brynn said. "Marcus, what is the default window on the mezzanine notes?"

"The notes were due upon change of ownership or material breach of financial warranties," Marcus replied crisply. "Since Mr. Halston fraudulently pledged forty-two trucks as collateral across three separate institutions, the debt has been accelerated. Full payment of eight million four hundred thousand dollars is due by twelve noon today."

Derek looked at the digital clock on the boardroom wall.

It was 9:14 AM.

He had two hours and forty-six minutes.

"You're a monster," Derek whispered, his eyes wide with unhinged terror. "You're trying to ruin me. My mother... my mother mortgaged her rowhouse to give me the seed capital for that fleet! If you take the trucks, the banks take her house!"

Brynn tilted her head, her gaze resting on the man who had pulled her hair and struck her across the face while his mother smirked.

"Then I suggest," Brynn said softly, "that Marjorie starts getting used to scrubbing other people’s floors."

She gestured slightly to the security officers.

"Escort these gentlemen off my property. And Marcus?"

"Yes, Madam Chair?"
