Chapter 8 - Breach of the Perimeter

"We’ve got active crowning! Straight to Labor and Delivery Suite 4!"

Nurses and doctors swarmed the gurney, rolling me through automatic doors, down long linoleum corridors painted soft pastel colors that clashed violently with the emergency unfolding in my body.

"Dr. Chen is scrubbing in!" someone yelled.

"Where is the father?" a triage nurse asked, rapidly checking my chart.

"There is no father," Richard’s booming voice cut through the corridor from behind the gurney. "I am the patient’s legal counsel. There is an active court protection order barring Eric Miller from this entire medical facility. If he sets foot in this building, you call hospital security and the city police immediately."

The nurse glanced at the red welt on my cheek, saw the intensity in Richard’s eyes, and gave a sharp, decisive nod. "Security! Flag this floor. Code Violet on the entrance doors. Nobody gets past the nurse's station without photo ID and explicit clearance."

I was transferred onto the delivery bed. The room was cold, filled with stainless steel equipment and monitors that beeped rapidly with my daughter’s strong, rapid heartbeat.

*Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.*

The sound filled the delivery room.

"Lydia, look at me," Dr. Chen said, her calm, familiar face appearing above me as she pulled on sterile gloves. "Your blood pressure is high, but the baby's heart rate is rock solid. She’s ready to meet you. When the next contraction hits, I need you to give me everything you have left. Can you do that?"

I swallowed against the dryness in my throat, nodding.

I had spent nine months being told I was delicate. Being told by Eric that I was overly emotional, that I was weak, that without his financial genius I would starve on the streets with a newborn. He had spent three years systematically chipping away at my soul, making me believe I was incompetent.

A massive surge of pain rolled through my abdomen, but this time, it didn't feel like helplessness. It felt like power.

"Push!" Dr. Chen commanded.

I bore down with every ounce of fury, every drop of love, and every fragment of pride I had reclaimed today.
