Chapter 2 - The Handcuffs and the Ledger

The crack of Judge Harper’s gavel sounded like a gunshot in the silent room.
"Bailiff," Judge Harper said, her voice dropping into a register so dangerously calm that the entire gallery froze. "Take Ms. Lang into custody immediately. Direct contempt of court and physical assault on a heavily pregnant petitioner. Restrain her now."
Brooke’s manic sneer evaporated into sheer panic. "Wait! No! You don't understand, Your Honor, she baited me! She’s been manipulating Eric for—"
Two burly bailiffs closed in before Brooke could finish the sentence. One seized her slender wrists, twisting them firmly behind the designer blazer Eric had bought her with marital funds, clicking cold steel handcuffs into place. The sound was sharp and metallic.
"Get your hands off me!" Brooke shrieked, kicking her heels against the hardwood floor. "Eric! Tell them! Do something!"
Eric did not do something. He barely even looked at her. His eyes were glued to the thick, cream-colored dossier spread wide across Judge Harper’s elevated mahogany bench. His face had drained from flushed anger to the sickly gray of damp cement.
"Sit down, Mr. Vance," Judge Harper snapped at Eric’s attorney, who had stood up with his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish. "If you utter one single syllable before I finish reviewing these verified exhibits, you will join your client's paramour in a holding cell."
Richard Bell stood beside me, immaculate and unmovable as granite. He placed a steadying hand beneath my elbow, gently guiding me down into my leather armchair. My cheek burned where Brooke’s diamond ring had grazed my skin, a fierce, throbbing welt blooming across my jawline. But my pulse wasn't racing from fear anymore. It was cold, clear adrenaline.
"Deep breaths, Lydia," Richard whispered under his breath. "Let them dig the grave. We just provide the shovel."
Under the table, my daughter shifted beneath my ribs, kicking hard against the strain of my belly. I pressed my palm against the mound of my stomach, silently promising her that the humiliation ended today.
Judge Harper adjusted her reading glasses. The rustle of paper was agonizingly slow. Each turn of the page seemed to carve another inch off Eric's posture.
"Exhibit A," Judge Harper read aloud, her sharp eyes flicking up to impale Eric. "A sworn financial affidavit submitted to this court three weeks ago by Eric Miller, declaring total liquid assets of twelve thousand four hundred dollars, debts exceeding eighty thousand dollars, and an ongoing bankruptcy proceeding."
She turned another page.
"Exhibit B. Forensic audit of Caroline Holdings, an offshore entity registered in Nevis with domestic accounts routed through Wilmington, Delaware. Sole beneficial owner: Eric Miller."
Eric’s attorney sank into his chair, rubbing his forehead.
"Total balance as of forty-eight hours ago," Judge Harper continued, her voice echoing off the high ceilings, "one million eight hundred and ninety-two thousand dollars in liquid securities. Plus a deed for a residential penthouse in Miami Beach, purchased outright for nine hundred and forty thousand dollars. Under the name of Brooke Lang, with a reversionary interest clause reverting solely to... Eric Miller upon sale."

Judge Harper looked over the rim of her glasses directly into Eric’s hollow eyes.
"You sat in my courtroom under oath, Mr. Miller, and testified you could not afford to pay five hundred dollars a month for your wife's prenatal medical bills."
