Chapter 9 - The Viral Retaliation

By Friday morning, Marissa’s GoFundMe campaign had raised over thirty-eight thousand dollars based on her fraudulent video framing me as a violent, dementia-ridden tyrant. Local news blogs had picked up the story, and a small group of online activists had even gathered outside my neighborhood entrance holding signs demanding "Justice for Marissa."
They thought they had won the war in the court of public opinion.
They forgot that truth does not require fifty thousand dollars in donations; it only requires proof.
At precisely noon, Arthur Sterling held an emergency press conference on the steps of the municipal courthouse. Arrayed beside him were five local news reporters, their cameras rolling.
"Good afternoon," Arthur announced, his voice cutting through the chatter. "My name is Arthur Sterling, representing Mrs. Clara Vance. Over the last four days, a despicable smear campaign has been waged across social media by Marissa Vance and her family, falsely accusing an eighty-one-year-old widow of domestic violence and dementia."
Arthur held up a thumb drive.
"Today, we are releasing the complete, unedited audio recording of the dinner that took place on October twelfth at the home of Marcus and Diane Sterling. You will hear, in crystal-clear audio, Marissa Vance demanding Mrs. Vance’s real estate assets, followed by the sound of a ceramic plate striking Mrs. Vance’s head, and Marissa screaming, 'How dare you say no to my mother!'"
A flurry of camera flashes erupted.
"Furthermore," Arthur continued, his eyes blazing, "we are releasing forensic accounting documents proving that Tyler Vance and Marcus Sterling embezzled over sixty-four thousand dollars from Mrs. Vance’s accounts to cover Marcus Sterling’s fraudulent business debts. A formal complaint has been filed with the Attorney General, and the GoFundMe platform has been served with a cease-and-desist letter and evidence of fraud."
Within fifteen minutes of the press conference ending, the local news stations aired the story.
The audio recording was played on the five o'clock news. Marissa’s shrieking voice, followed by the sickening crunch of the ceramic plate and my pained gasp, was broadcast to over two million households. Tyler’s pathetic, cowardly plea for me to "calm down" while I was bleeding was played in high definition.
The internet turned on Marissa like a pack of starved wolves.
The comments under her GoFundMe page exploded with fury:
*— "Disgusting monster! You threw a plate at an elderly woman?!"*
*— "Lock her up and throw away the key!"*
*— "I want my donation back! She lied to everyone!"*
By six o'clock, GoFundMe permanently deleted Marissa’s campaign, froze the thirty-eight thousand dollars, and announced that all donors would be refunded while forwarding Marissa’s account details to law enforcement for wire fraud investigation.
An hour later, Marissa’s PR firm released a short, scathing statement:
*"Effective immediately, Marissa Vance has been terminated from her position as junior account manager. Our company has zero tolerance for domestic violence, fraud, and elder abuse."*
Sitting in my living room, sipping a cup of chamomile tea with Helen by my side, I watched the television as the news anchor announced that the district attorney was officially upgrading Marissa’s charges to first-degree felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a vulnerable adult.
"How does it feel, Clara?" Helen asked gently, smiling with deep satisfaction.

"It feels like justice," I murmured. "Bitter justice, but justice nonetheless."
