Chapter 10 - The Crumbling Empire

The following Monday was a bloodbath for the Sterling family.

At nine in the morning, federal agents from the FBI and state police raided Marcus Sterling’s suburban home. Marcus was escorted out in handcuffs, his expensive suit rumpled, while neighbors gathered on their manicured lawns to take photos with their smartphones. The charges included wire fraud, securities fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy.

Diane Sterling sat on the curb in her silk bathrobe, screaming hysterically as agents carried boxes of luxury goods, jewelry, and financial ledgers from the house to be seized as proceeds of crime. The bank immediately placed an emergency foreclosure lien on their mansion.

Meanwhile, at the municipal courthouse, Marissa stood before Judge Patricia Bennett for her arraignment.

Stripped of her makeup, wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, and handcuffed at the wrists and ankles, Marissa looked nothing like the arrogant girl who had tossed a ceramic plate at my skull.

"Given the severity of the newly introduced evidence, including the audio recording and the victim's age," Judge Bennett said, her voice stern and unyielding, "the defendant’s bail is revoked. Marissa Vance will be remanded into custody without bail pending trial."

Marissa broke down, hyperventilating as the bailiffs grabbed her by the arms and dragged her through the heavy steel door toward the holding cells. Diane, sitting in the gallery, shrieked and fainted into the arms of a court clerk.

Tyler sat in the back row of the courtroom, completely alone.

He looked like a ghost. He had lost ten pounds in a week. His face was gaunt, his eyes sunken, his designer clothes wrinkled and dirty. Nobody would look at him. Nobody would sit near him. He was a social pariah, radioactive to anyone who knew the story.

As the courtroom emptied, Tyler slowly walked toward the front where Arthur Sterling was packing his legal briefs.

"Mr. Sterling," Tyler croaked, his voice cracking. "Please. Can I just speak to my grandmother? For one minute? I'm sleeping in a twenty-dollar-a-night motel. The police came to question me about the sixty-four thousand dollars this morning. If I'm charged with grand larceny, my life is completely over."

Arthur looked at Tyler with nothing but cold, clinical pity.

"Tyler," Arthur said, zipping his briefcase shut. "Your grandmother gave you twenty-four years of unconditional love, a debt-free college education, and a home. You repaid her by stealing her money and standing by while your wife tried to bash her head in. There is no conversation left to have."

"I'm her flesh and blood!" Tyler shouted, tears streaming down his face. "She can't just throw me away!"

"You threw her away the moment you told her to 'calm down' while she was bleeding on your dining room floor," Arthur countered ruthlessly. "Mrs. Vance has signed an order of protection against you. If you step within five hundred feet of her or her properties, you will join your wife in county lockup within the hour. Do not test her."

Arthur walked out of the courtroom, leaving Tyler standing in the aisle, clutching his head in his hands, weeping until his knees gave out.
