Chapter 8 - The Paper Trail Unravels

By noon, Evelyn Vance strode into my hospital room carrying two venti iced coffees and a thick expandable legal accordion file.

She took one look at me, set the coffees on the side table, and gently leaned over to kiss my temple. "You look remarkably stubborn for someone who had emergency surgery twelve hours ago."

"I saw Maya," I said, a faint smile touching my lips. "They wheeled me into the NICU. She’s breathing on her own, Evelyn. She’s tiny, but she’s breathing."

"That girl comes from your bloodline," Evelyn said softly. "Of course she’s a fighter."

Daniel pulled up a chair for Evelyn, who sat down and unclasped the brass buckles of her leather file. Her expression shifted instantly from protective aunt to ruthless corporate shark.

"All right," Evelyn said, leaning in. "Here’s where we stand. Richard spent the night in a holding cell at the County Justice Center. His high-priced defense attorney, Marcus Kane, tried to get him an expedited bail hearing at dawn. I personally appeared before Judge Henderson—who, luckily for us, happens to despise wealthy domestic abusers—and argued that Richard constitutes an immediate flight risk and an active danger to a vulnerable victim."

"Did he get bail?" Daniel asked.

"Bail was set at five hundred thousand dollars, cash only," Evelyn replied with a grim smirk. "And a temporary protective order was granted. Richard is legally prohibited from coming within one thousand feet of you, Daniel, your home, or Maya’s hospital room. If he calls you, texts you, or sends Ethan with another pathetic message, he violates bail and goes straight back to a cell."

"What about the car?" I asked. "And Vanessa?"

"The BMW is currently impounded as physical evidence in an active felony investigation," Evelyn explained. "Vanessa spent two hours being interrogated by detectives last night. She was terrified. She sang like a canary. She admitted on the record that Richard told her two days ago that he was 'reallocating' your car to Ethan's household to 'punish you for your insolence regarding the wedding seating arrangements.'"

I closed my eyes, letting out a ragged breath. "He really thought he could just take it."

"It gets worse, Claire," Evelyn leaned forward, lowering her voice. She pulled out a stack of bank statements and corporate registries stamped with official red seals. "When I filed the grand larceny report, the detectives pulled the title history and insurance registration for your vehicle. And because Richard’s private mechanic was involved, the fraud division did a routine sweep of Richard’s primary holding company, Whitman Holdings LLC."

Daniel frowned. "Why would they look into his holding company?"

"Because," Evelyn said, tapping the documents, "to transfer title on a vehicle without the owner present, you need a signed Power of Attorney. Richard didn't just give Vanessa your keys. He submitted a forged Power of Attorney document to the state DMV three days ago, claiming he had the legal right to re-title the vehicle under Ethan's name."

My blood ran cold. "He forged my signature?"

"He didn't just forge your signature on the car, Claire," Evelyn’s eyes were deadly serious. "Once we saw that forged POA, my firm got an emergency subpoena for the Whitman Family Trust accounts—the ones your late grandfather set up for you and Ethan twenty years ago."

I gripped the hospital bed rails. "What did he do, Evelyn?"

"Richard’s real estate developments in the north district went belly up six months ago," Evelyn revealed. "He’s been bleeding cash. He was leveraged up to his eyeballs. To keep his firm afloat, to pay for Ethan’s lavish lifestyle, and to keep up appearances at the country club, Richard forged your name as a personal guarantor on a four-million-dollar mezzanine loan. And when that wasn't enough, he systematically drained your grandfather's trust fund. Your trust fund. Two point eight million dollars... gone."

Daniel stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "He stole her inheritance?"

"He embezzled it," Evelyn corrected coldly. "And he used Claire’s forged signature to secure debt that would have bankrupted her the moment his development company defaulted. He didn't just shove you, Claire. He has been planning your financial execution for half a year."
