Chapter 6 - Legal Armor

The front doors were thrown open as two uniformed patrol officers from the local precinct rushed inside, followed closely by four paramedics carrying a trauma kit and a folding stretcher.
"Down here! On the floor!" Daniel shouted, stepping back from Richard but keeping his body between the officers and me.
The paramedics swarmed around me instantly. Cold hands checked my pulse; scissors cut through the hem of my dress to assess the bleeding; an oxygen mask was pressed over my nose and mouth.
"Blood pressure is crashing—85 over 50," the lead paramedic, a woman with sharp, efficient eyes, called out. "Uterine rigidity detected. Possible placental abruption. We need her loaded and transported to St. Jude’s trauma obstetrics immediately! Call ahead for an emergency surgical team!"
"No, wait," Richard stepped forward, holding his hands up placatingly toward the two police officers. "Officers, thank God you’re here. Let me explain. I am Richard Whitman. There was a domestic dispute—my daughter became hysterical, tripped on the rug, and fell. Her husband attacked me. I want him removed from my property."
The younger officer looked at the pool of blood on the floor, then at me writhing on the stretcher, then back at Richard.
Before the officer could speak, the front door swung open wider, and Evelyn Vance stepped across the threshold.
She wasn't in a courtroom suit; she wore dark jeans, a cashmere sweater, and a look of cold, predatory fury. She held a leather briefcase in one hand and her phone in the other.
"Officer Martinez, Officer Kowalski," Evelyn said, addressing both cops by the names on their badges without missing a beat. "Step away from that man."
Richard scoffed. "Evelyn? What is this? This is private family business—"
"Shut your mouth, Richard," Evelyn snapped, her voice like cracking whipcord. She pulled a laminated card and several documents from her briefcase, thrusting them toward Officer Martinez. "I am Evelyn Vance, legal counsel for Claire Whitman Mercer and Daniel Mercer. I am here to formally report a Class B felony assault on a pregnant person resulting in catastrophic bodily injury, committed by Richard Whitman."
Richard laughed, a shrill, nervous sound. "She fell! It was an accident!"
"We have seven witnesses in that dining room who heard you threaten her, and three who saw you shove her," Evelyn said smoothly, gesturing toward the terrified dinner guests huddling like sheep near the corridor. "Furthermore, I am reporting an active Grand Larceny. The vehicle parked in the driveway—a 2024 BMW X5, VIN ending in 4892—is titled solely to Claire Mercer. Here is the certified Department of Motor Vehicles title deed, the purchase receipt from Claire’s private bank account, and the current registration."
Evelyn turned her glacial gaze to Vanessa, who was standing paralyzed against the dining room sideboard.
"And you," Evelyn pointed a sharp, manicured finger directly at Vanessa's face. "The woman holding the keys. If you do not hand those keys to Officer Kowalski within three seconds, I will personally ensure you are booked tonight as an accomplice to felony grand theft auto and possession of stolen property exceeding fifty thousand dollars."
Vanessa shrieked, dropped the key fob onto the marble floor as if it had caught fire, and burst into tears.
"Ethan!" Vanessa wailed. "Do something!"
Ethan stood with his back pressed against the wall, staring at the floor, utterly hollow.
"Ma'am, we're moving her now!" the paramedic yelled, lifting the stretcher.
"Daniel, go with her!" Evelyn commanded without looking away from Richard. "I’ll handle the scene. Go!"
Daniel kissed my forehead through the plastic oxygen mask, gripping my cold hand. "I’m right here, baby. I’m right here. Hang on."

As they wheeled me out into the flashing red and blue lights of the driveway, I heard Evelyn’s voice ring out through the grand entryway:
"Officers, arrest that man."
