Chapter 5 - The General's Safehouse

Inside the custom foam padding lay three items: a heavy brass key stamped with a three-digit sequence, a military-grade encrypted tactical tablet, and a handwritten letter sealed with red wax.
Arthur lunged for the tablet. "That's company property!"
I didn't even raise my voice. I simply caught his wrist in a standard joint-lock grip, twisting his forearm down toward the desk. Arthur gasped in sudden, sharp agony, his knees buckling until he was bent over the desk, gasping for air.
"Dad!" Julian cried out, taking a frantic step forward, then freezing when I looked at him.
"You have spent forty years mistaking Grandfather’s patience for weakness," I whispered in Arthur’s ear, applying just enough pressure on his median nerve to keep him immobilized. "And you spent ten years mistaking my silence for submission. If you touch my desk again, I will dislocate your shoulder and cite national security defense protocols. Do you understand me, Mr. Vance?"
"Let... let go," Arthur wheezed, his face pale with shock.
I released him. He stumbled back, clutching his wrist, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and venomous hatred. Julian rushed to his side, holding his father upright.
"You're crazy," Julian stammered. "You're completely insane. We'll have you arrested! We'll call the state police!"
"Call them," I said calmly, breaking the red wax seal on the handwritten letter. "Ask them if they have clearance to enter a designated federal security perimeter."
I unfolded the heavy parchment. My grandfather’s handwriting was unmistakable—sharp, aggressive strokes written with an old fountain pen.
*Clarissa,* the letter read.
*If you are reading this, my heart has finally quit, and Arthur is likely standing in the room trying to steal what he didn't earn. Do not trust him. Do not trust Julian. And above all, do not trust the board.*
*Three months ago, I uncovered Project Chimera. Arthur has been using Vance Industries logistics channels to smuggle our proprietary bio-synthetic blood clotting agent—the one your unit developed for frontline trauma—to an unsanctioned foreign syndicate. They aren't using it to save lives, Clarissa. They are using it to stabilize subjects during weaponized neurotoxin trials.*
*I tried to stop it through civilian channels, but Arthur has bought every regulator from Richmond to D.C. The key in this case opens the blast cellar beneath the old carriage house. The tablet contains the master ledger and the encryption keys to the family trust.*
*I didn't leave the empire to Arthur. I left the shares to the only Vance who still remembers what an oath means.*
*Finish it.*
*— General Vance.*
My blood ran cold. Frontline trauma coagulants—a project I had personally overseen the field testing for—was being weaponized on black markets. And my own father had signed the shipping manifests.
I folded the letter and slid it into my breast pocket. I grabbed the brass key and the encrypted tablet.

"What does it say?" Arthur demanded, his voice trembling with suppressed panic. "Clarissa, what did he give you?!"
"A court-martial," I said, locking the Pelican case. "For treason."
