Chapter 7 - The Stolen Identity

Julian turned to Caroline. The venom in his smile was terrifying.

“When we met at the charity gala last winter, Caroline, do you remember what you told me?”

Caroline began trembling violently. “Julian... Julian, please, not here. Let’s talk about this in private...”

“You told me,” Julian continued loudly, ignoring her completely, “that your family had a long, painful history of military sacrifice. You told me that your heart bled for wounded veterans because you had personally financed medical rehabilitation clinics. You told me that your sister had died overseas, a tragic martyr, and that you carried her memory in everything you did.”

Shocked gasps erupted from the front row. Several bridesmaids covered their mouths.

“You used her service to flatter my foundation,” Julian spat. “You wore her sacrifice like a cheap piece of jewelry to make yourself look empathetic enough to marry into the Vance name.”

“I... I didn't mean it like that!” Caroline wept, panic finally breaking her composure completely. “Mother said—Mother told me you loved military stories! We were just trying to connect with you!”

“You lied about my life, Caroline?” I spoke up, stepping forward until I stood inches from my younger sister. “You told the man whose blood was on my uniform that I was dead, so you could steal his surname?”

“You ruined everything!” Caroline screamed, dropping all pretenses of elegance, her hands clawing the air. “You always ruin my life! Why couldn't you just stay dead?! Why did you have to come back?!”

“Because I invited her,” Julian said with devastating finality.

Richard lunged forward, grabbing Julian’s shoulder. “Now see here, Vance! You signed an agreement with Bennett Maritime! Our merger is legally binding! You cannot disgrace my daughter in front of New York society over some ancient wartime sob story!”

Ethan stepped in.

Before Richard could blink, Ethan’s hand locked onto Richard’s wrist with the crushing force of a hydraulic vice. Richard gasped in sudden, sharp agony, dropping to his knees as Ethan applied precision pressure to the joint.

“Take your hands off the man,” Ethan whispered softly into Richard’s ear. “Before I treat you like an enemy combatant.”
