Chapter 11 - The Unopened Envelope

I stared at the faded manila envelope in Julian’s hand.

Written across the front in my grandmother’s distinctive, elegant cursive were four simple words:

*For Claire. The Truth About Margaret.*

A strange, cold sensation settled in the pit of my stomach.

“What is this, Julian?” I asked, my fingers hesitating an inch above the parchment.

“I haven't read it,” Julian said softly, his grey eyes dead serious. “The seal was intact. But my lead investigator ran a preliminary check on the birth certificates filed in the county registry thirty-three years ago.”

Ethan stepped closer to my side, his hand resting securely on the small of my back, anchoring me to the earth. “What did you find, Julian?”

Julian looked directly into my eyes. The warmth from moments ago was replaced by a dark, simmering tension.

“Claire... Margaret Bennett isn't your biological mother,” Julian revealed in a quiet whisper that sounded louder than a bomb going off in the empty cathedral. “And the three million dollars wasn't an inheritance from your grandmother’s estate.”

My breath caught in my throat. “Then... what was it?”

“It was hush money,” Julian said, extending the envelope toward my trembling fingers. “Paid to Richard Bennett by a family far more powerful—and far more dangerous—than mine, to make sure you never discovered who your real father is. And Claire... the man who fathered you just announced his campaign for the presidency.”

Before my fingers could break the seal on the string, Ethan’s phone began to vibrate violently against his chest.

Ethan pulled it out, glanced at the encrypted military caller ID, and his face went instantly pale.

“Claire,” Ethan said, his voice tightening with urgent, combat-ready alarm. “We have to move. Right now. We’ve been tracked.”
