Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Detective Vance stepped forward and pulled a pair of stainless steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Ethan Cole, you are under arrest for Grand Larceny in the First Degree, Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree, and Identity Theft."

*Click. Snap.*

The cold steel locked around Ethan’s wrists behind his back.

He didn't fight. He didn't speak. He simply hung his head as the guests in the first five limousines stepped out onto the gravel driveway, their mouths open in stunned disbelief.

Among the arriving guests were three prominent real estate developers Ethan had been pitching for investment capital over the last two months, promising them equity in his "joint venture" with Bennett Event Systems. They stood on the flagstones, watching the man they were about to hand millions of dollars to being escorted down the steps in handcuffs.

"Is that Ethan?" one woman gasped, holding her fur wrap tight around her shoulders. "Is he being arrested?"

"Look at Vanessa," another whispered, pulling out her smartphone. "She’s in a dressing robe! What happened to the couture gown?"

A young fashion influencer who had been invited to cover the wedding immediately raised her phone on a stabilizer gimbal and began live-streaming to her four hundred thousand followers.

*“Guys... oh my God... you are not going to believe this,”* she whispered into the mic, panning the camera across the scene. *“We just arrived at the Cole-Hart society wedding, and Ethan Cole is literally in handcuffs. The police are taking him away. The entire wedding was funded on stolen corporate cards!”*

Within ninety seconds, the video was being shared across every social platform in Manhattan.

Vanessa saw the camera. "Stop filming!" she screamed, lunging toward the influencer with her hair wild and her face streaked with black mascara. "Turn that off! Ethan, do something! Call my father! Call Julian!"

"Mr. Vance is Miss Bennett’s attorney, Miss Hart," Julian said smoothly, stepping past her without looking down. "And based on the invoices we recovered from your personal email account—where you explicitly instructed vendors to charge Miss Bennett’s corporate account while posing as her executive assistant—I strongly advise you to retain your own counsel. Detective Miller has a secondary warrant for your arrest as an unindicted co-conspirator."

Vanessa’s breath caught in her throat. She looked at Detective Miller, who pulled a second set of cuffs from his jacket.

"Miss Hart," Miller said calmly. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

"No... no, please!" she wailed, collapsing onto her knees on the limestone pavement. "I didn't know! He told me he was rich! He told me he owned the company! I was just planning my dream wedding! You can't arrest me for trusting my fiancé!"

"You signed two of the vouchers yourself, ma’am," Miller said, pulling her up by the arm and securing her wrists. "You can tell the grand jury all about your trust issues."

The guests parted like the Red Sea as the two detectives escorted Ethan and Vanessa toward an unmarked police cruiser parked beside the fountain.

Ethan looked back one final time.

His tuxedo jacket was twisted, his hair was plastered to his forehead with cold sweat, and his eyes were wild with ruin. He looked at me, standing at the top of the stone stairs, completely untouched, flanked by the general manager of the estate and the premier corporate attorney in New York.

He had wanted to be a giant. He had ended up a cautionary tale.

The cruiser doors slammed shut. The siren let out a single, sharp yelp as the car accelerated down the long winding driveway, disappearing past the golden autumn trees toward the county jail.

Silence fell over the courtyard once more.

The three hundred guests stood in stunned, awkward silence, looking up at me. Influencers, socialites, former colleagues, and strangers.

I took a slow breath, smoothed the front of my emerald blazer, and smiled warmly.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I called out, my voice resonant and perfectly poised. "I apologize for the disruption to your weekend. However, the champagne is chilled, the estate gardens are open, and the afternoon is far too beautiful to waste on a fiction. Please, join me on the terrace."

The bandleader, realizing that the corporate check from Bennett Event Systems had just cleared in real time on his iPad, tapped his baton against his stand.

Within two minutes, the twelve-piece orchestra struck up a smooth, vibrant jazz standard. The estate staff opened the heavy French doors to the grand terrace. Servers in black waistcoats poured vintage champagne into crystal flutes.

The guests, after a momentary hesitation, began laughing, chatting, and flocking toward the bar.

The wedding was dead. The celebration of its demise had just begun.
