Chapter 7 - The Collapse

"What the hell is going on here?" Ethan demanded, his voice cracking as he strode toward Arthur Sterling. "Why isn't the arch built? Why are the caterers standing around? Where are the decorators?"

Vanessa hurried behind him, her silk slippers clicking against the flagstones, her face contorting with panic. "Ethan! Why is my dress courier sitting in a delivery van? Why aren't they bringing my gown to the suite?"

Arthur Sterling didn't flinch. He extended the clipboard.

"Mr. Cole, every single vendor on this property operates under the Bennett Event Systems enterprise clearinghouse protocol. At eight o’clock this morning, the master corporate account issued a Code 403: Fraudulent Access Revocation."

Ethan went chalk-white. "That’s... that’s impossible. It’s a glitch! I told you, I am an authorized executive on that account!"

"The card on file," Arthur continued in a monotone, unrelenting voice, "was reported stolen by the primary account holder, Miss Claire Bennett. Furthermore, the commercial discount codes you applied were flagged as unauthorized corporate embezzlement. Total outstanding balance required to initiate services today: three hundred and sixty-four thousand, two hundred dollars."

"What?" Vanessa shrieked. The iced latte slipped from her fingers, shattering on the flagstones, splashing brown liquid across the hem of her white silk robe. "Three hundred thousand dollars? Ethan, what is he talking about? You said the wedding was completely paid for!"

The bridesmaids and groomsmen had gathered at the edge of the driveway, murmuring among themselves. Several bridesmaids pulled out their phones, looking horrified.

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Ethan hissed, rounding on her with a wild, feral look in his eyes. He turned back to Arthur, grabbing the manager by the lapel of his coat. "Listen to me, you old fool! My guests will be here in two hours! Influencers, magazine editors, high-net-worth investors! If you don't unlock those doors and tell these people to do their jobs, I will sue this estate into bankruptcy!"

Arthur calmly reached down, peeled Ethan’s fingers off his lapel, and stepped back.

"If you lay hands on me again, Mr. Cole, my security staff will remove you from the grounds immediately. As it stands, you have precisely thirty minutes to provide certified cashier's checks or an authenticated direct wire clearance for the full balance. If you cannot, the gates will be locked, and your three hundred guests will be turned away by the state police."

"Give me your phone," Ethan barked at his best man. "Give me your damn phone!"

Ethan snatched the phone, his hands shaking so violently he almost dropped it. He dialed a number.

Upstairs on the private balcony, my personal cell phone began to vibrate against the stone balustrade.

I looked down through the balusters. I could see Ethan pacing in frantic circles around the fountain, holding the phone to his ear, screaming into the receiver.

*“Pick up, Claire! Pick up the damn phone, you psychotic bitch!”*

I let it ring until it went to voicemail.

Two seconds later, my screen lit up with a text message:

*Claire, I know you’re behind this. Stop this right now. You are embarrassing me in front of everyone. If you ruin this day, I swear to God I will destroy you. Call the estate and release the hold!*

I looked at Detective Miller, who stood beside me on the balcony, watching the scene below with a pair of compact binoculars.

"Is that sufficient evidence of communication and intent, Detective?" I asked.

"More than enough, Miss Bennett," Miller replied, closing his notepad. "He’s actively attempting to coerce access to the defrauded funds. Let’s go down."

Down in the courtyard, total hysteria had broken out.

Vanessa was in tears, screaming at the courier from *Maison de Soie*, who had rolled up his window and locked the van doors. "Give me my dress! That is my dress! You can’t keep my wedding dress!"

"I can if it isn't paid for, lady!" the driver shouted through the glass.

"Ethan!" Vanessa shrieked, spinning around, her makeup beginning to streak down her cheeks. "Do something! Where is your money? Where is your corporate account? Call your partners! Call your bank!"

"I don't have three hundred thousand dollars cash, Vanessa!" Ethan screamed back, his composure completely disintegrating. "Nobody keeps that kind of cash in a checking account!"

"What do you mean you don't have it?" she screamed, her voice reaching a shrill, glass-shattering register that made the groomsmen step back in embarrassment. "You told me you owned twenty percent of Bennett Event Systems! You told me you had an eight-figure trust fund! You told me you bought my ring in Antwerp!"

"Your ring is on a corporate credit line, you idiot!" Ethan roared, completely losing his mind. "I don't own any of it! None of it!"

The courtyard fell dead silent.

Even the delivery drivers stopped arguing. The bridesmaids stared at Ethan in absolute horror. Vanessa looked as though she had been struck across the face with a iron rod.

"You... you what?" she whispered.

Before Ethan could answer, the heavy oak doors at the top of the grand staircase swung open.

The sound echoed like a gunshot across the limestone courtyard. Every head turned toward the stairs.

I walked out into the midday sun.
