Chapter 8 - The Confession Goes Viral

"My name is Marcy Vance," she began, looking directly into the camera lens. Her voice was raw, but it carried an undeniable, piercing clarity. "And six hours ago, I was brought into St. Jude’s Emergency Room after Dustin Vance, my boyfriend and a professional MMA fighter, assaulted me in our apartment."

She turned her face to the side, allowing the harsh fluorescent hospital light to illuminate the massive purple hematoma over her eye, the cracked bone beneath her skin, and the medical braces binding her ribs.

"For eight months, I stayed silent because Dustin and his uncle, Salvatore Thorne, threatened to kill my parents. Tonight, my father went to Dustin’s gym to confront him. Dustin openly admitted to what he did, bragging that his family’s corrupt connections made him untouchable."

Tears spilled over her eyelashes, but she didn't look away.

"Ten minutes ago, an assassin sent by Salvatore Thorne fired two rounds at my father in this hospital’s parking lot. If anything happens to me, to my mother Elena, or to my father Mark Vance, I want the world to know exactly who did it. The Thorne family does not own this town. They only own our fear. And I'm not afraid anymore."

She tapped the screen, hit upload, and tagged every local news affiliate, the state attorney general, and every MMA promotion Dustin was signed with.

Within three minutes, the video had a thousand shares.

Within fifteen minutes, ten thousand.

The comment section exploded into an avalanche of public outrage. Local residents who had suffered in silence under Thorne’s predatory loan operations, gym patrons who had witnessed Dustin’s violent temper, and parents of high school athletes Marcy had trained flooded the feed with messages of solidarity.

By four in the morning, outside the front entrance of St. Jude’s, three news vans with satellite dishes were setting up tripods on the sidewalk. Thorne’s empire was built on shadows and whispers; Marcy had just dropped a blinding flare into the center of his living room.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was Agent Sarah Lin.

"Mark," she said, her voice crackling with excitement over the line. "We checked Dustin’s ring. You were right. The micro-drive had fifty gigabytes of encrypted ledgers, shell account passwords, and video surveillance files. But there's more."

"What did you find?"

"Thorne knows he’s ruined. His private jet at the regional airstrip just filed an emergency flight plan for Costa Rica. He’s heading there right now with his private security detail. We have units en route, but they're twenty minutes out. If he gets airborne, extradition will take years."

I looked over at Marcy, who was resting against her pillow, looking exhausted but triumphant. Then I looked at Elena, whose eyes held a mixture of fear and profound pride.

"He won't get airborne," I told Lin.

"Mark, don't do something reckless!" Lin shouted. "Wait for tactical!"

"The airstrip is five miles from my workshop," I said calmly. "And I don't intend to let the man who ordered a hit on my daughter board a flight to paradise."

I hung up, kissed Elena on the cheek, and squeezed Marcy's uninjured hand.

"Dad... be careful," Marcy whispered.

"I’m just going to make sure his plane is delayed, sweetheart," I smiled faintly. "Back in time for breakfast."
