Chapter 3 - Broken Glass and Steel Cuffs

The front double doors burst inward with a splintering crash.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! NOBODY MOVE! ON THE GROUND NOW!"

The commands cut through the gym like razor wire. Half a dozen tactical officers clad in black Kevlar, carrying patrol rifles held at low ready, flooded the entrance. Behind them came four unmarked black utility cruisers, tires screaming as they cordoned off the alleyway.

Miller immediately threw his hands into the air, stepping clear of the counter with wide, frantic eyes. The remaining three fighters dropped to their knees without waiting for a second order. They were gym rats who liked hurting people in sanctioned cages, not hardened felons willing to trade rounds with federal law enforcement.

Only Dustin remained standing, frozen in the center of the ring like a cornered animal.

"Uncle Sal!" he screamed toward nobody in particular, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic pitch. "Call Uncle Sal right now, Miller! Get him on the phone!"

"Shut your mouth and interlock your fingers behind your head!" barked a female agent stepping through the breach. She wore a tailored windbreaker with FBI embroidered in gold thread across the back. Her dark hair was pulled tight in a regulation bun, her gaze laser-focused on Dustin.

This was Special Agent Sarah Lin. I had spoken to her outside the hospital parking lot thirty minutes earlier.

Dustin didn't comply immediately; his ego was fighting against the crushing weight of reality. "You don't know who you're dealing with, lady! My uncle will have your badge by midnight!"

Two tactical officers moved in with practiced synchronicity. One swept Dustin’s trailing leg, and the other guided his heavy upper body down hard against the canvas of the training mat. Dustin grunted as all the air left his lungs, his face smashed flat against the sweat-stained rubber.

Click-clack.

The heavy steel ratchets of the handcuffs snapped tight around his thick wrists.

"Dustin Vance," Agent Lin stated coldly, crouching down beside his ear while an officer hoisted him up by his elbows. "You are under arrest for aggravated battery resulting in serious bodily injury, witness intimidation, and conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent. I strongly suggest you use it, because your recording today was remarkably thorough."

Dustin twisted his neck, his glare finding me where I stood quietly near the bench. The venom in his eyes was blinding. "You setup son of a bitch! You baited me!"

"You put my daughter in an intensive care bed with three cracked ribs, a fractured cheekbone, and internal bleeding," I said, my voice dropping so low only he and Agent Lin could hear it. "You weren't baited. You were arrogant. You thought fear made you untouchable."

Agent Lin picked up the small transmitter from the bench, dropping it into an evidence bag. She looked at me, nodding respectfully. "Mr. Vance. Medics are en route for that gentleman with the broken arm. You should go. Your wife called my office three times. Marcy is awake."

The mention of Marcy’s name hit me harder than any punch Dustin could have thrown. The calculated Marine instructor inside me melted instantly, leaving behind nothing but an aching, terrified father.

"Thank you, Sarah," I whispered.

"Get to St. Jude’s," she urged softly. "We'll handle this garbage. But Mark... Thorne knows by now. His scouts watch this street. Watch your six."

"I always do."

I turned my back on Dustin’s muffled curses as they hauled him toward the idling cruiser outside. The night air was crisp and biting as I stepped into the parking lot. My knuckles were red and stinging from the joint lock, but I didn't care.

I got into my battered pickup truck, turned the key, and headed straight toward the hospital.
