Chapter 9 - Caleb’s Awakening

The board members cleared out in hushed, hurried whispers, leaving only Richard, Evelyn, Caleb, and me in the cavernous room.

Richard stood up, placed a gentle hand on my shoulder, and nodded toward the door. “Evelyn and I will handle the emergency public relations statement. Take whatever time you need, Claire.”

They walked out, clicking the heavy oak doors shut behind them.

Caleb stood twenty feet away, his head in his hands, trembling violently. When he finally looked up, his eyes were bloodshot, his face pale and haggard.

“You lied to me,” he whispered.

“I never lied to you, Caleb,” I replied, remaining seated. “I told you I was an auditor. I told you I worked in financial integrity. You never asked who my clients were. You never asked what my projects were. Every time I tried to talk about my career, your mother interrupted to talk about Victoria’s latest promotion, and you let her.”

“You let them treat you like dirt!” Caleb shouted, his voice breaking into a sob. “You let my mother belittle you at every Sunday dinner! You let Victoria mock your shoes, your car, your family! If you had this kind of power, why didn't you just tell them? Why did you let them walk right into a trap?”

“Because if I had told them, they would have hidden the money better,” I said, standing up slowly. “And more importantly… I wanted to see who you really were, Caleb.”

He flinched as if struck.

“I wanted to see if my husband had a backbone,” I continued, walking slowly toward him. “I wanted to see if, when pushed to the absolute edge, you would stand beside the woman you swore an oath to protect. But when your sister drew blood from my face, your first instinct wasn't to comfort me. It was to ask me to apologize to save your trust fund.”

“I was scared, Claire!” Caleb dropped to his knees on the carpet, reaching out to grasp my hand, his fingers icy and trembling. “You don't know what she did to me growing up! You don't know how Margaret controls everything! She made me feel small my entire life! I thought if I just kept the peace, we could be happy!”

“You cannot buy peace with cowardice, Caleb,” I said, gently pulling my hand away from his grasp. “A man who lets his family brutalize his wife doesn't deserve a marriage. He deserves the cage they built for him.”

I pulled my wedding ring off my finger. It was a modest platinum band, the only thing Caleb had purchased with his own salary rather than his family trust. I set it on the polished table beside his trembling hands.

“The divorce papers will be delivered to your desk by tomorrow morning,” I said. “Richard has agreed not to terminate your IT position, provided you cooperate fully with the forensic accountants. You won't go to prison, Caleb. But you will have to learn what it feels like to live without your mother’s shadow.”

I turned and walked toward the door.

“Claire! Please!” Caleb cried out from the floor, his voice echoing in the vast, empty room. “I love you! Claire!”

I didn't look back.
