Chapter 8 - The Downfall

The double doors of the boardroom opened again.
This time, it wasn't building security. Two men in dark suits with federal badges clipped to their lapels walked into the room, followed by an armed Chicago Police officer.
“Margaret Grant, Victoria Grant,” Special Agent Miller said, stepping toward the table. “We have an active federal warrant for the seizure of all digital records, accounts, and communications related to Grant Logistics and Aegis Holdings LLC. We also have a state warrant for Victoria Grant for felony aggravated battery occurring on commercial premises.”
Victoria let out a shrill, hysterical shriek. “Mother! Do something! Call Senator Hayes! Call him right now!”
“Shut up, Victoria!” Margaret hissed, her face purple with rage. She slammed her cane against the floor. “Do you know who we are? Do you have any concept of the political fallout this will cause?”
“We know exactly who you are, Mrs. Grant,” Agent Miller said, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “And your friend Senator Hayes is currently answering questions regarding campaign donations routed through Aegis Holdings. You’re coming with us.”
The officer stepped forward. With a metallic *click-clack*, the cuffs locked around Victoria’s wrists behind her back. The woman who had sneered at my clearance-rack dress was sobbing openly, mascara streaking down her cheeks, her designer suit wrinkled as she was forced toward the exit.
“Claire! Claire, please!” Victoria wailed, turning back toward me in desperation. “Tell them it was an accident! We’re family! Caleb, tell her! Caleb!”
Caleb stood frozen, staring at his sister in handcuffs, then at his mother, whose icy facade had finally shattered into pure, helpless fury.
“You destroyed this family,” Margaret spat at me, her eyes burning with venom as the federal agents took her arm to escort her out for formal questioning. “You planned this from the very beginning, you calculating viper!”
“No, Margaret,” I said quietly, leaning forward across the table. “I didn't plan your greed. I didn't plan your arrogance. And I certainly didn't tell Victoria to slap me in front of fifty cameras. You built the gallows with your own hands. I just let you pull the lever.”

The doors closed behind them. The boardroom was dead silent save for the ragged breathing of Caleb Grant.
