Chapter 10 - The Boardroom Execution

By noon the following day, the story had consumed every local and national news cycle.

*SCANDAL ROCKS SAVANNAH DYNASTY: BENNETT ENTERPRISES CEO ACCUSED OF EMBEZZLEMENT AND CONSPIRACY.*

The Telfair Academy gala had officially been cancelled, but the boardroom on the thirty-second floor of the Bennett Tower was packed to capacity. The mahogany conference table was surrounded by twelve solemn-faced board members, external forensic auditors, and legal counsel.

At the head of the table sat Matthew.

He looked like a hollow shell of the golden boy who had humiliated me in front of thirty-one guests at the family dinner two weeks prior. His expensive Italian suit was rumpled, dark circles bruised the skin beneath his bloodshot eyes, and his hands shook as he repeatedly checked his buzzing phone. Lauren hadn't returned a single call. Her phone was permanently turned off.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Matthew began, his voice hoarse, attempting to project confidence. "This is an orchestrated misunderstanding. My wife has suffered from severe prenatal psychosis, and her legal counsel is exploiting family trust mechanics to—"

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open.

A collective gasp swept through the room as Grandmother Evelyn entered, walking with slow, deliberate authority. Beside her walked Julian Vance. And behind them, pushed in an ergonomic wheelchair by a private nurse, was me.

I wore a simple black cashmere dress, my hair pulled back neatly, holding my newborn daughter Clara against my chest, safely swaddled in a pale green blanket.

Matthew jumped to his feet, knocking his crystal water glass over. "Rachel? What the hell are you doing here? You gave birth fourteen hours ago! Get her out of here! This is a confidential executive session!"

"Sit down, Matthew," Evelyn commanded.

None of the board members moved to help Matthew. In fact, three senior directors immediately stood up out of respect for Evelyn, bowing their heads as she took the center chair at the head of the table, directly opposite Matthew. Julian wheeled me into position beside her.

"Members of the board," Evelyn announced, placing her hands on the polished wood. "As the majority shareholder controlling forty-nine percent of Bennett Enterprises' voting stock, alongside Arthur Bennett's testamentary trust, I have called this emergency meeting to address the gross misconduct of our Chief Executive Officer."

"You can't do this without sixty percent quorum!" Matthew shouted, desperation cracking his voice. "The bylaws require—"

"The bylaws state that in the event of documented criminal indictment of an executive officer, the majority shareholder may assume emergency conservatorship," Julian Vance said, laying a thick stack of certified court documents in front of each board member. "At 10:30 this morning, the Department of Justice officially unsealed an eight-count indictment against Matthew Bennett for wire fraud, money laundering, and grand larceny."

The board members began frantically turning pages, murmuring in shock and disgust.

"Furthermore," Julian continued, tapping a button on his remote, activating the massive presentation monitor at the front of the room. "These are the banking records from Osprey Horizon LLC. Over the past fourteen months, $4.2 million was siphoned from the Bennett Foundation's pediatric cancer initiative into personal accounts registered to Lauren Davis. Matthew Bennett authorized each wire transfer using personal digital certificates."

"Lauren lied to me!" Matthew screamed, slamming his fists onto the table. "She told me those were tax-sheltered investment vehicles! I didn't steal that money! She played me!"

"You betrayed your family for vanity and lust, Matthew," Evelyn said coldly. "You allowed that woman to humiliate your pregnant wife. You stood in your kitchen and let Rachel bleed on the floor while you worried about donor optics. You are not a Bennett. Arthur would spit on your shadow."

Evelyn raised her hand. "All those in favor of immediately terminating Matthew Bennett as Chief Executive Officer, stripping him of all executive stock options, and appointing Rachel Bennett as trustee of the family foundation pending legal review... raise your hand."

One by one, every single hand around the mahogany table went up.

Matthew looked around the room, his eyes wild, searching for a single ally. But he found only cold, disgusted stares. Even the directors he had personally appointed looked down at their papers, refusing to meet his gaze.

"You're ruined, Matthew," I said quietly, speaking for the first time. The room fell into pin-drop silence. I looked straight into the eyes of the man who had tried to break me. "You wanted to take my daughter. You wanted to send me away with nothing. But today, you leave this building with only the clothes on your back."

Two Savannah police detectives stepped through the boardroom doors, handcuffs gleaming at their belts.

"Matthew Bennett," the lead detective said, walking up behind him. "You are under arrest for grand larceny and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Put your hands behind your back."

As the cold steel clicked around Matthew’s wrists, he began to sob—ugly, pathetic tears streaming down his face as he was dragged past the board members, past his grandmother, and past the wife and daughter he had so casually discarded.
