Chapter 9 - The Wrath of the Matriarch

The private waiting corridor of St. Jude's Memorial Hospital looked more like an armed tribunal than a hospital waiting room. Four armed security officers guarded the double doors leading to the neonatal wing, while two hospital administrators stood nervously behind the nurse's station.

Patricia Bennett stood in the center of the marble floor, her pastel yellow cashmere cardigan draped over her shoulders, her diamond earrings swinging wildly as she gesticulated at the chief of hospital security.

"This is a kidnapping!" Patricia hissed, her face flushed crimson under her foundation. "My son is the primary legal guardian! Rachel is mentally unstable and emotionally unfit to care for that infant! We have psychiatric assessments ready for filing!"

"Assessments written by whom, Patricia?"

Evelyn’s quiet voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a broadsword.

Patricia whipped around, her eyes widening as Evelyn stepped through the double doors, flanked by Julian Vance and two paralegals carrying banker boxes of files.

"Evelyn!" Patricia gasped, quickly attempting to recover her aristocratic poise. "Thank goodness you're here. The hospital staff has lost their minds. They won't allow me into the room to secure the Bennett heir. We need to get that child away from Rachel before she causes an international PR disaster for Matthew's gala tomorrow!"

"There is no gala tomorrow, Patricia," Evelyn said, stopping three paces away.

Patricia blinked, stunned. "What are you talking about? Of course there's a gala. Matthew is announcing the waterfront expansion project. The governor—"

"The governor cancelled his attendance forty minutes ago," Julian Vance interrupted smoothly, opening a manila folder and handing a sheet of paper to Patricia’s lead attorney, a nervous-looking man named Henderson. "As did the mayor, the chairman of the port authority, and every major philanthropic donor in Chatham County."

Henderson looked down at the paper, his face instantly draining of color. "Patricia... we need to leave. Now."

"Leave? Are you out of your mind?" Patricia snatched the document from Henderson's trembling hands. Her eyes scanned the bold lettering across the top: *UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF GEORGIA — EMERGENCY ASSET FREEZE AND SEIZURE ORDER.*

"What is this trash?" Patricia spat, crumbling the paper in her manicured hand. "Matthew hasn't done anything wrong! This is an orchestrated smear campaign by that ungrateful, trailer-park girl Matthew took pity on!"

"That 'ungrateful girl' just gave birth to the only legitimate heir to the Bennett family estate," Evelyn said, taking a step closer. The matriarch seemed to grow taller, her fragile frame radiating an ancient, unyielding power. "And unlike you and your pathetic excuse for a son, Rachel possesses something the Bennett family hasn't seen in thirty years: honor."

"You're siding with an outsider against your own flesh and blood?" Patricia shrieked, dropping all pretenses of southern charm. "I raised Matthew! I built his reputation! You’re an old woman clinging to a past that died with Arthur!"

"Arthur built Bennett Enterprises with sweat and steel," Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "He did not build it so that a spoiled, weak-willed little boy could steal money from sick children to buy oceanfront condos for a cheap corporate spy."

Patricia recoiled as if she had been slapped. "Lauren is a respected consultant—"

"Lauren Davis is currently being questioned in an interrogation room at the federal building on West Oglethorpe Avenue," Julian stated coldly. "And five minutes ago, she signed a proffer agreement with the United States Attorney. She has agreed to testify against Matthew in exchange for immunity on the corporate espionage counts."

The corridor went dead silent.

Patricia’s mouth opened and closed soundlessly, like a fish gasping on dry land. "She... she wouldn't. Lauren loves Matthew. They were going to—"

"They were going to frame Rachel for tax fraud," Julian finished. "The documents you brought to the nursery yesterday? The ones you tried to coerce a heavily pregnant woman into signing? We had a hidden camera installed in the chandelier, Patricia. Every word, every veiled threat, and every line of that illegal custody waiver is recorded in 4K resolution with crystal-clear audio."

Patricia’s knees buckled. Her attorney caught her by the elbow before she hit the floor.

"Julian," Evelyn commanded, not sparing her daughter-in-law another glance. "Have security remove these trespassers. If Patricia Bennett steps foot within five hundred yards of Rachel or Clara, file the restraining order immediately."

May you like

Evelyn turned and walked back toward my hospital room. Behind her, Patricia collapsed against the hospital wall, weeping into her trembling hands as the reality of her total destruction set in.
