Chapter 8 - Daniel’s Early Return

The clock in the living room showed 6:30 PM.

Vanessa had returned from the spa an hour early, lounging on the sectional sofa in a silk robe, scrolling through her iPad while barking orders at me to fold laundry in the adjoining master suite.

I was trapped. If I tried to leave now, Vanessa would complain to the agency, raising suspicions. If I stayed, Daniel would arrive within ninety minutes. If he saw me—even with the wig and the makeup—there was a dangerous chance he would recognize his own mother’s voice, her eyes, or her cadence.

"Martha!" Vanessa’s voice cut through the apartment like a whip. "Did you finish pressing the bed sheets? They feel rough. I told you, three hundred thread count linen needs steam only!"

"Almost finished, ma'am," I called out from the bedroom, deliberately coughing to disguise my tone.

Suddenly, the front door chime chimed, followed by the electronic click of the smart lock.

My blood ran cold.

"Surprise!"

Daniel’s voice. Warm, energetic, filled with youthful enthusiasm.

I backed into the walk-in closet, pulling the heavy mirrored door until only a two-inch crack remained. My pulse pounded in my ears like a war drum.

From my vantage point, I could see into the master hallway.

Vanessa jumped up from the sofa. The transformation was instantaneous, chilling in its perfection. The sneer vanished. The cruel tension in her jaw melted away. Her eyes softened into pools of adoration, and a bright, breathless smile illuminated her face.

"Danny!" she squealed, running toward him and throwing her arms around his neck. "Oh my god, you're back! You said you wouldn't be home until tomorrow!"

Daniel caught her in his arms, spinning her around, laughing with genuine, unfiltered joy. He kissed her forehead, then her lips.

"The conference ended a day early," Daniel said, setting down his leather duffel bag. "I missed you so much, baby. I couldn't stand another night in that hotel room without you."

"I missed you more," she whimpered, burying her face into his chest. "The penthouse felt so empty without you. I couldn't even sleep."

Watching my son hold this viper, watching him look at her with such pure, undefended love, broke something fragile inside my chest. He was Richard’s son. He believed in love. He believed in honor. And she was using his virtue as a weapon against him.

"Did the agency send a good temp while I was gone?" Daniel asked, loosening his tie. "You looked stressed when I left."

Vanessa sighed, stepping back and making a small, delicate pout.

"Oh, Danny... she's been a nightmare, honestly. She broke one of your father’s crystal glasses yesterday. I didn't even yell at her—I felt so sorry for her because she's old and clearly struggling. I just told her to be more careful. But she’s so slow. I was actually about to let her go."

Daniel frowned, his protective instincts instantly flaring. "If she broke Dad’s glass and she’s stressing you out, fire her tonight, Vanessa. You shouldn't have to deal with that a month before our wedding."

"No, no," Vanessa cooed, stroking his cheek. "I’ll let her finish today. I don't want to be cruel. Let's just go out to dinner. Le Bernardin? Just the two of us?"

"You have the biggest heart in the world, you know that?" Daniel murmured, kissing her hand. "Go get dressed. I’ll wash up."

"Give me twenty minutes," Vanessa smiled sweetly, turning toward the master suite.

I moved like a ghost, slipping out through the secondary service door connected to the laundry pantry, and into the rear hallway. I took the service stairs down three flights before catching the freight elevator to the basement.

When I stepped out onto the Manhattan pavement into the cool evening air, I pulled off the wig and wiped the makeup from my face with a damp towel.

The time for observation was over.

The wedding rehearsal dinner was tomorrow night.
