Chapter 10 - The Audio That Silenced the Room

The massive high-definition projector screen behind me flickered to life.
Instead of a childhood photo of Daniel, a crystal-clear high-definition video appeared on the screen. It was taken from the terrace of the Central Park penthouse on Monday morning.
Vanessa’s voice exploded through the ballroom’s state-of-the-art surround sound system, echoing off the gilded ceiling with terrifying clarity.
*“Relax, Julian. The golden boy is stuck in Chicago until the weekend. We have the entire week.”*
The room froze. A server holding a tray of champagne flutes stopped dead in his tracks.
On screen, Vanessa’s face was unmistakable as she leaned against the terrace glass, twirling her hair.
*“I told you, the prenuptial agreement is practically useless. If we divorce after twenty-four months, or if there's an alleged breach of marital fidelity, I walk away with thirty-five million dollars, plus the penthouse. Daniel signed it... He folded like a cheap lawn chair.”*
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom like an icy wind.
Daniel’s face drained of every ounce of color. He slowly stood up from the table, his eyes locked onto the screen, his chest heaving.
"What... what is this?" Vanessa stammered, her voice cracking as she jumped to her feet. "Turn that off! Turn it off right now! This is a deepfake! Danny, someone is framing me!"
The audio didn't stop.
*“I don't love him, Julian... Sleeping with him feels like doing charity work. He's boring, he talks endlessly about his dead father, and he has zero edge. But he’s rich... and his mother has one foot in the grave.”*
Vanessa’s mother stood up from her chair, her face pale as a ghost, while Julian Vance tried to quietly slip toward the exit doors. Two private security guards I had hired stepped into the doorway, crossing their arms and blocking Julian’s path.
Then, the video cut to Tuesday afternoon inside the kitchen.
The screen showed Vanessa screaming at the kneeling housekeeper, her face twisted in demonic fury:
*“You clumsy, decrepit cow! Look at what you did to my blouse! If you ever look at me funny again, I will have the police drag you out of this building in handcuffs. Now clean this mess up on your hands and knees!”*
The screen captured the violent shove, the shattering crystal, and Vanessa sneering down at the older woman.
The silence in the ballroom was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning. Over a hundred of the most powerful people in New York stared at Vanessa in total, unadulterated disgust.
Daniel turned slowly toward Vanessa. His hands were shaking violently. Tears brimmed in his eyes, but behind the tears was a cold, terrifying shock.
"Danny... baby, please," Vanessa begged, tears streaming down her face, her hands reaching out for him. "That wasn't me! It’s AI! Eleanor hates me! She’s trying to destroy us because she wants you all to herself!"
I stepped down from the stage, walking slowly toward the head table.
I reached into my evening clutch, pulled out a small cloth bag, and placed it gently in the center of the white tablecloth.
Inside the bag was a faded blue poly-blend domestic uniform, a pair of thick wire-rimmed glasses, and a name tag that read: **MARTHA GOMEZ**.
Vanessa looked down at the uniform.
Her jaw dropped. Her eyes widened until the whites showed completely. Her hands flew to her mouth as the realization hit her like a freight train.

"You..." Vanessa choked out, stumbling backward. "The cleaning lady... Martha..."
"I scrubbed your floors for three days, Vanessa," I said, my voice ringing across the silent room like a funeral bell. "I picked up the glass you shattered. I listened to your phone calls. And I opened your safe."
