Chapter 9 - The Hunt Ends in Havenport

The sight of Lorenzo Rossi—the merciless don who had ruled the New York docks with an iron fist—kneeling in the dirt like a beggar was something I had never imagined in my wildest dreams.

"Elena told you," I whispered, keeping the barrel steady.

"No," Lorenzo said, his chest heaving. "I found the medical receipt in our bedroom. And then I made Vanessa confess everything."

"Vanessa didn't hold a gun to your head when you held her, Lorenzo," I spat, my voice laced with venom. "I heard you. 'She believes whatever I let her believe. Loyal, obedient... and completely unaware.' Those were your words. You laughed at me."

"I was a fool," Lorenzo cried, bowing his head until his forehead nearly touched the bloody floorboards. "I was an arrogant, blind, miserable coward. I was so terrified that someone would see how much power you had over me that I lied to her face just to feel like I was still in control."

He looked up, his face pale, blood dripping down his temple from the bullet graze. "I have loved you since the night I saw you at your father's gallery, Isabella. You were the only pure, clean thing in a life built on filth. When you walked into my world, you made the darkness bearable. And because I am a broken, violent monster, I convinced myself that if I treated you like everyone else, I wouldn't bleed when you left."

"Well, you're bleeding now," I said coldly.

"I deserve to bleed out on this floor," he answered without hesitation. "Shoot me, Isabella. If you pull that trigger, Marco and my men outside will not touch you. I signed a full decree before leaving New York. The entire Rossi estate, every company, every trust fund, every property—it has already been legally transferred into your name and our children’s names."

My breath hitched. "What?"

Lorenzo reached slowly into the inside pocket of his coat. I raised the gun higher, but he produced only a leather-bound folio. He laid it gently on the floor before him.

"You took three million when you left," Lorenzo murmured. "The Rossi empire is worth four point two billion. It is all yours. I stepped down as Don. The Commission has been disbanded. I burned the ledgers. The Valenti family has surrendered."

He looked at my stomach, his eyes filling with a tenderness so profound it made my throat ache.

"I don't ask you to come back to New York," he whispered. "I don't ask you to be my wife. I don't even ask you to ever let me hold them. All I ask... is that you let me protect you from the shadows. Let me buy the land around this town so no enemy ever finds you again. And when they grow up... just tell them their father was a fool who spent his life trying to atone for one moment of unforgivable stupidity."

I lowered the gun an inch. My finger loosened on the trigger.

The wind howled through the shattered front door, blowing rain across the floor between us.

"Lorenzo," I said softly.

He looked up, hope flickering like a dying match in his dark eyes.

May you like

"Get up," I told him.
